A 400-meter-long cobbled market square, an important Renaissance basilica, and hiking trails with different destinations give Pułtusk a clear cultural and scenic focus. When planning a trip to Pułtusk, you can choose between historic sites within the town and the named routes. This gives you distinct, clearly described ways to enjoy culture and outdoor activities.

Pułtusk: Market Square and Architectural History

Pułtusk, the seat of the county administration, lies in the Narew Valley at the transition between the Ciechanów Upland and the Kurpie Plain, and on the western edge of the Biała Forest. The market square is a prominent landmark in the town: at 400 meters long, it is considered the longest cobbled market square in Europe. Townhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries surround it and define its historic character.

Among the outstanding buildings is the Collegiate Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was recognized as a Pomnik Historii, a monument of particular significance to Polish culture, and is considered the best-preserved and most complete example of the so-called Pułtusk group of Masovian Renaissance architecture. Those interested in architectural history will find both a national distinction and a clearly defined regional architectural classification here.

Museum, Chapel and Castle

The Regional Museum has been located in the town hall tower at Rynek 43 since 1964. The exhibition “Medieval Proto-Town in Pułtusk” presents the town's earliest history in its oldest urban brick building. Check whether the exhibition is on display before visiting. The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene continues to serve as a place of worship; historical and art exhibitions are also held there.

The castle also brings together several aspects of local history. It stands on a hill on the banks of the Narew, was formerly the residence of the Bishops of Płock, and is now Dom Polonii, a conference and hotel center. The castle's cuisine is also represented by specialties at Bar Kasztelanka; check what is on offer before visiting. Kayaks and pedal boats can be rented on the castle grounds, although availability may vary.

Hiking Trails with Different Destinations

The routes differ in their named waypoints and destinations. The Szlak Wielkiej Przygody runs from Pułtusk via Popławy, the Wielgolas Nature Reserve, Obryte, and Sadykierz to Komorowo. Another hiking trail runs from Pułtusk via Ponikiew and Szygłówek to Gnojno. The Szlak Borów Nadnarwiańskich starts on Bartodziejska Street in Pułtusk, passes near the Popławy Nature Reserve, and continues toward Zatory. Check the trail markings and access conditions locally before setting out.

A seasonal sightseeing destination is the former Jesuit storerooms at Wzgórze Abrahama. They are open for visits from May to September on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with entry times at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. As seasonal visiting information may change, it is advisable to confirm the times before your trip. Pułtusk thus offers historic buildings, a museum, and a chapel alongside specific trails and a sightseeing option available for a limited time.
