The Church of St. Anne in Piaseczno tells its story through several clearly datable layers: the present-day brick building was constructed around 1550; surviving fragments of wall paintings from 1555 depict the Passion of Christ. Church art offers a tangible way to explore the city’s culture, alongside the town hall, the historic layout and the sculptures in public spaces.
Church Art and City History
Three late Gothic portals belong to the Church of St. Anne. Particularly notable is the portal in the presbytery, with its wrought-iron doors featuring latticework. A 16th-century crucifix from an earlier rood screen has also been preserved in the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Together, the wall paintings, portals and crucifix showcase different aspects of the furnishings: religious imagery, craftsmanship and an older decorative feature.
The town hall also offers a precisely dated glimpse into Piaseczno’s architectural history. It was built in 1823 from plastered brick in the Neoclassical style, based on a design by Hilary Szpilowski. A clock was added to the town hall tower in 1969 to mark the 540th anniversary of the granting of town rights. The historic town layout from the time of the town’s founding is preserved around the market square, now Plac Piłsudskiego. The town hall and the town layout thus represent different dimensions of the city’s history: a specific building and the structure of the centre, preserved over a longer period.
Art in Public Spaces and the City Park
The Józef Wilkoń sculpture trail, created in 2018, offers a different kind of art. It consists of casts of sculptures and a mural on the wall of Przystanek Muzyki. Sculptures along the trail can be found in the Piaseczno market square, at Zakątek Kultury, on Skwer Kisiela and in the city park. These named locations provide several points of reference for art across the city; the trail complements the sacred art of the Church of St. Anne with sculptures and a mural.
The city park combines a connection with nature and heritage-protected history. It is entirely under heritage protection, and its modernisation preserved the historic character of the grounds. The pond in the park provides a habitat for several bird species. Two different interests thus meet in the same park: the history of the landscaped grounds and the pond’s role as a habitat for birds.
Plan for the Narrow-Gauge Railway and Fair
The Piaseczyńsko-Grójecka narrow-gauge railway runs on the Piaseczno–Tarczyn–Piaseczno route and has been operating for more than 100 years. As a seasonal guide, services run on weekends from spring to autumn. Check the current timetable before travelling if you plan to take a ride. Trains can be booked for special events such as birthdays, company gatherings and conferences.
The Piaseczno Fair is an annual outdoor event that draws on the historic tradition of the city’s large fairs. Since 2005, the fairs have been held in September in Piaseczno city park, with traditional dishes available at stalls. If you want to plan your stay around the fair, check the specific event dates in advance. September is the stated month of the event, but it does not replace a specific date for planning your trip.
Piaseczno in the Wider Piaseczyński Destination
The wider Piaseczyński destination also offers longer routes to explore. The 28-kilometre Szlak Południkowy runs from Piaseczno railway station through Zalesie Dolne, Górki Szymona, Zimne Doły, Zalesie Górne, the Łoś Nature Reserve and Nowy Prażmów to Prażmów. A shorter regional alternative is the 10-kilometre Chojnowski szlak zabytków przyrody through the Chojnów, Pilawski Grąd and Uroczysko Stephana nature reserves. The route lengths help you compare the distances involved without equating the regional routes with sights in the town itself. When visiting the eleven nature reserves of Chojnów Landscape Park, you must stay on existing paths and marked trails.
