Explore Kargowa through its distinctive features: a late Neoclassical church, a commemorative plaque on the town hall, a historic palace park and a variety of trails. These offer several ways to plan your trip. You can focus on architectural and memorial history, the development of a landscaped park, or hiking and cycling tours. Whichever aspect interests you, it is also a useful starting point when looking for a holiday apartment in Kargowa.

Church and Remembrance at the Town Hall

The former Protestant church is now the Roman Catholic branch church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe. This late Neoclassical building was erected between 1801 and 1805. Its former and current ecclesiastical affiliations offer two perspectives on the same building, while its style and construction date place it in the architectural history of the early 19th century. A commemorative plaque on the front of the town hall recalls the armed resistance of the garrison led by Captain Więckowski against the terms of the Second Partition of Poland. The two subjects highlight different aspects: the church foregrounds architecture and ecclesiastical history, while the plaque focuses on the garrison and its resistance. Those interested in cultural history can thus move between architectural history and historical remembrance.

The Palace Park and Its History

The palace park adjoins the palace in Kargowa and was established in the first half of the 17th century, incorporating an ornamental garden. Its origins connect the park with a deliberately designed garden. The palace park covers 6.5 hectares and contains 25 tree species. Its area gives a sense of its scale, while the number of species draws attention to its trees.

The dates are easy to compare: the church was built between 1801 and 1805, while the park dates to the first half of the 17th century. The church and park therefore represent markedly different historical periods; the commemorative plaque offers a distinct focus on remembrance of the armed resistance.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

When considering the trails, it is important to distinguish between two different scales. The Szlak bez końca hiking and cycling trail passes through Kargowa and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. Check the local signage before setting out. This should be distinguished from the approximately 110-kilometre network of marked hiking and cycling trails through the most beautiful places in the municipalities of Kargowa, Babimost and Siedlec. The total length refers to all three municipalities together, not to Kargowa alone. Distinguishing between the individual trail and the larger network helps put the figures in context.

The Obrzyca Trail offers further points of reference. The places named along it include Uście, Kargowa, Chwalim, Smolno Wielkie and Podlegórz; near Cigacice, it reaches the Oder at river kilometre 472. The Obrzyca Trail can therefore be understood in terms of the places it passes and its connection to the Oder. By contrast, what matters for the Szlak bez końca is that it passes through Kargowa and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle.
