Babimost brings sacred art together with regional cultural heritage. The Church of St. Lawrence houses a late Gothic polyptych and a Marian painting from the 15th century; the ethnographic collection and the Skwer Muzyków Ludowych offer other cultural highlights. The city thus brings together religious art, everyday objects, and the tradition of kozioł folk bands. The educational and history trail broadens the view to include historic sites in the surrounding municipality.
Sacred Art at the Sanctuary
The Church of St. Lawrence in Babimost is the Sanctuary of Matka Boża Gospodyni Babimojska. The church houses a late Gothic polyptych by the Master of Gościeszowice, dating from 1499, which was transferred from Sulechów. A polyptych is a multi-panel artwork; in this case, it is also classified as late Gothic and attributed to a master. The presbytery also contains a painting of Matka Boża Gospodyni Babimojska on metal, dating from the 15th century. The polyptych bears the date 1499, while the Marian painting is dated to the 15th century: both dates refer to the same century, but the polyptych has an exact year.
Ethnographic Collection and Kozioł Tradition
The Izba Pamiątek Regionalnych offers a different perspective. It was founded in 1963 at the initiative of Lubuskie Towarzystwo Kultury in Zielona Góra. The ethnographic collection includes, among other things, agricultural tools, folk costumes, household objects, and musical instruments. These include the kozioł weselny, sierszeńki, and mazanki; the collection also features looms, tools for processing flax, and memorabilia from the Bractwo Rybackie. The areas represented thus range from agriculture and textile work to clothing, household life, and music. This focus differs from the sacred art of the sanctuary: the Izba centers on objects in an ethnographic collection. If you plan to visit the Izba Pamiątek Regionalnych, check visiting options in advance.
The Skwer Muzyków Ludowych in Babimost commemorates the kozioł folk-band traditions characteristic of the region. Together with the instruments mentioned at the Izba, it offers another perspective on regional music: the Skwer focuses on folk bands as a cultural tradition, while the Izba presents instruments within a broader ethnographic collection.
History Trail in the Municipality of Babimost
The educational and history trail in the Municipality of Babimost passes historic buildings, national memorial sites, and other historic places. Information boards along the trail describe the sites in Polish and German. The boards make it easier to understand the stops in German as well. The trail’s geographic scope sets it apart from the individual cultural sites in Babimost: it covers the Municipality of Babimost, while the sanctuary, Izba, and Skwer are individual sites in the city.
