Castle history, a distinctive sundial, natural monuments and routes of very different lengths offer several themes to explore on a trip to Sulechów. If you’re looking for hotels in Sulechów, you can start by considering whether architecture and local history, individual natural features or specific routes are what interest you most.

Castle History and Local Identity

The castle on Aleja Wielkopolska has a Neoclassical appearance today, with visible fragments of pilaster decoration from the 18th century. A Calvinist chapel was opened in the castle rooms in 1701 and was called Kościół Zamkowy, meaning “Castle Church.” The same castle thus provides a tangible link both to its Neoclassical appearance and to a specific episode in its earlier use.

Another local symbol is the Suleszki: small knight sculptures named after Sulech. The city connects Sulech with the origin of its name; the figures depict him as a knight and are intended to encourage people to learn about the history of the place. Here, the story of Sulech’s name is paired with a visual depiction of his knightly form.

Sundial and Natural Monuments

An azimuthal sundial stands in Sulecha Park on ul. Kusocińskiego and is described as the largest in Poland. It was installed on 29 August 2022. Its granite dial is 350 cm in diameter; lines, hour curves and half-hour curves allow the time to be read precisely in every season. The object combines a large scale with a clearly specified function, adding a technical feature alongside the older castle history.

Natural monuments are also specifically designated in Sulechów: 13 trees and one erratic boulder. Beside the historic water tower grows a white mulberry with a trunk circumference of more than 4 m, described as the thickest in Europe. The designated natural monuments thus sit alongside a single tree whose circumference and stated distinction make it a natural feature in its own right.

The Radowice Nature Reserve, a few kilometres east of Sulechów, is a natural area nearby. It extends across the municipalities of Sulechów and Trzebiechów and covers 52 ha. The protected area complements the natural monuments with a named landscape area, a specified size and a connection to both municipalities.

Trails of Different Lengths

The routes described differ both in length and in the places they connect. The 10.5 km Southern Trail runs between Mozów and Kruszyna via Sulechów. The 15 km Szlak Mistrza ołtarza z Gościszowa starts in Sulechów. The 41 km Red Historical Battle Trail features historic battlefields and natural attractions as its main highlights. When comparing them, the distance is not the only consideration: it also helps to ask whether a particular route, a starting point in Sulechów, or historic and natural highlights are what you’re looking for.

The green Natural Monuments Trail is 44 km long and forms part of the 152 km walking and cycling network in the Municipality of Sulechów. It starts and ends in Sulechów. The trail itself is 44 km long; 152 km refers to the network it belongs to. This clearly distinguishes the length of this individual trail from the wider municipal network.

Nearby, there is also a 3.4 km forest educational trail in the Klemsko forest district. It runs from the turn-off from the Sulechów–Poznań national road towards a forester’s lodge on the edge of Klępsk. At 3.4 km, it is shorter than the other routes mentioned here; its described route and location in the forest district give it a different point of reference from the trails that start in Sulechów.
