Łęknica combines a cross-border geopark landscape with a specific cycling route. The Łęknica–Przewóz cycling route starts at OKSiR on ul. Wojska Polskiego and, on the return journey, goes via the “Dawna Kopalnia Babina” Geopath. Exhibitions and workshops are also available at the Muskau Arch UNESCO World Geopark’s Culture and Education Centre. This offers different ways to plan a stay, focusing on cycling, geology, and industrial and cultural history.

Geopark and landscape features

The Muskau Arch Geopark extends on the Polish side through Tuplice, Trzebiel and Łęknica, and on the German side through Weißwasser and Döbern. The Muskau Arch Landscape Park encompasses areas belonging to five municipalities—Tuplice, Trzebiel, Łęknica, Przewóz and Brody—in the Lubusz Voivodeship. It protects the Polish section of the terminal moraine formed by the continental ice sheet. When planning your trip, note that the names are not interchangeable: the geopark includes places on both sides of the border, while the landscape park focuses on protecting the glacially formed terminal moraine on the Polish side.

Cycling route and geotourism trail

The Łęknica–Przewóz cycling route starts at OKSiR on ul. Wojska Polskiego. On the return journey, it goes via the “Dawna Kopalnia Babina” Geopath, making this geotourism site part of the described return route. The “Dawna Kopalnia Babina” geotourism trail also runs south of Łęknica through former lignite and ceramic clay mining areas. Along its 5.3 kilometres, 11 thematic stops explain the history of these areas. For your choice, this means that the cycling route passes via the Geopath on its return journey, while the geotourism trail focuses on former raw-material extraction, with 11 stops along 5.3 kilometres.

Exhibitions, workshops and visitor information

The Muskau Arch UNESCO World Geopark’s Culture and Education Centre is located in Łęknica and offers permanent and temporary exhibitions on the area’s nature, geology, hydrology, dendrology, and industrial and cultural history. Dendrology is the study of trees and woody plants; hydrology deals with water. The exhibitions therefore combine natural and geological history with industrial and cultural history. The centre also offers workshops in ceramics and glass processing: while the exhibitions cover a range of subjects, the workshops focus specifically on two materials and how they are processed.

The tourist information office is located in the same centre. It offers tourist advice as well as guidebooks, maps and promotional souvenirs from the Muskau Arch UNESCO World Geopark. The double bridge is another geographical landmark: it is one of two bridges over the Lusatian Neisse linking the Polish and German parts of Muskau Park. As the programme, workshops and tourist services may change, it is best to check the current offerings before your trip.
