Świebodziński brings together different travel interests: the architectural history of Świebodzin and the lakes and landscapes of Świebodziński County. The city’s historic centre preserves an almost medieval layout. A rectangular market square forms the centre, with streets running towards it at right angles.
Świebodzin: an old town centre rich in architectural detail
The historic urban fabric is considered one of the region’s most valuable urban ensembles. The town hall’s architectural history can be traced through specific features: it was probably built as a two-aisled structure in the second half of the 14th century. The cellars retain barrel vaults made of fieldstone from the building’s early phase. The term describes a continuously arching ceiling; fieldstone refers to the building material used.
The churches also differ in their architectural styles and dates of construction. The Church of St Michael the Archangel was built mainly in the second half of the 15th century as a three-aisled hall church with a five-sided chancel. The Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland (NMP Królowej Polski), a former Protestant church, was built between 1698 and 1900 in the Neo-Gothic style. Original stained-glass windows remain inside, including one bearing the coat of arms of Świebodzin.
Three towers, sections of the town wall and the moat remain from the town’s fortifications. The best-preserved sections are on Parkowa, Okrężna and Szpitalna Streets. The statue “Christ the King” is on a different scale: the Art Deco figure is 33 metres tall, and its crown measures 3 metres; together with the hill, the monument reaches a total height of 52.5 metres. An observation terrace is located at the top of the town hall tower; from there, the view extends over the town and its surroundings. If you plan to visit it as a viewpoint, check access arrangements in advance.
