Santoczno can be explored through two themes: a glacially shaped waterscape and the history of the former ironworks. Both are reflected in specific features of the village, from Mrowinko Lake and the Santoczna River to buildings and memorials.

Lake, River, and Trails Through the Valley

Santoczno lies along the glacial trough of the 22.5 ha Mrowinko Lake and the Santoczna River, which flows out of the lake. The trough, lake, and river are therefore clearly connected geographically. The Santoczna also features along a trail: the Santoczno–Santok section runs through the river’s picturesque valley. Those planning a visit with the landscape as their main focus will find a different emphasis here than in a tour of historic buildings and monuments.

Memories of the Ironworks

The former ironworks produced wire, nails, and iron bars. It is commemorated by a boulder in the square in front of the church. Erected in 2005, it bears a cast of a plaque depicting a model of the first German steam engine.

Other architectural traces include the ruins of a former watermill and the ruins of a former ironworks or iron forge. Together with the surviving church and former rectory, they represent different aspects of the village’s history: industrial activity, religious architecture, and the former parish system.

Half-Timbered Church and Former Rectory Architecture

The single-nave half-timbered church with galleries was created by converting a former ironworks storehouse dating from 1767. “Single-nave” refers to the church’s single interior space; the galleries add further levels. In 1819, a tower was added to the church, housing two bells from a Berlin bell foundry. The conversion thus links the history of the ironworks site with a distinctive sacred building.

Another building is the Neoclassical former rectory, dating from the 19th century. A wing was added in the 20th century, and the house has a half-hipped roof. These features give the architecture its own chronology: construction in the 19th century was followed by an extension in the next century. Alongside the information about the church, the rectory offers a second perspective on Santoczno’s architectural history.

Lapidarium and Natural Monument

A small lapidarium made up of gravestones from a former German cemetery is located near the bridge and waterfall on the Santoczna. A lapidarium is a collection of stone artifacts; here, the stones point to a former cemetery. Another local feature is a beech tree in Santoczno protected as a natural monument. Its trunk circumference is more than 4 meters, and its age is estimated at around 200 years. Unlike the buildings and industrial remains, it is a natural monument—and its age is an estimate.

An Overview of Cycling and Hiking Trails

The blue-marked cycling route runs from Gorzów Wlkp. via Czechów, Santok, Brzezinka, and Górki Noteckie to Santoczno; its total length is 32 km. The Santoczno–Santok section is described as running through the picturesque valley of the Santoczna. The green-marked Górki Noteckie–Zdroisko–Santoczno hiking trail is listed as 7.9 km (12.3 km). If you are planning a trip, check the specific route and conditions before setting out; trail conditions may change.
