Biegoszów combines a long local history with an almost completely preserved ensemble of residential and agricultural buildings. The small village lies in the eastern Kaczawskie Foothills, also known as the Złotoryja Foothills. Its location in the narrow valley of a left-bank tributary of the Wilcza adds a distinct landscape feature to the architectural setting. In Biegoszów, the focus is therefore not only on individual historical events, but also on the relationship between the settlement and the valley.

Village History and Cultural Heritage

Biegoszów was founded in the mid-14th century. In the 16th century, the village was associated with a peasants’ revolt against the then landowner, von Leist. The village’s religious history is also part of its development: Biegoszów grew into an important centre of Protestantism. At the same time, there was never a church in the village itself; its residents belonged to the estates and parish of Nowy Kościół. Religious significance and church affiliation are two distinct aspects here: Biegoszów was a centre of Protestantism, while the parish was based in Nowy Kościół.

The architectural heritage is evident not only in individual buildings. Biegoszów preserves an almost complete ensemble of residential and agricultural buildings, largely retaining its original form without major alterations. This largely preserved overall form makes the buildings together an important part of the village’s history. The former school building was also listed on the map of the cultural heritage project documented in 2020.

The project included an interactive walk through the villages. Mieczysław Hajder led participants to eight important places associated with the history of Gozdno and Biegoszów. The walk thus focused on the history of both villages and their various historic sites.

Valley and Surroundings

Biegoszów lies at an elevation of about 260 to 299 metres above sea level in a narrow valley of a left-bank tributary of the Wilcza. South and east of the village are mainly spruce forests, interspersed with beech and other deciduous tree species. Basalt quarries are also part of the immediate surroundings.

The area’s economic and industrial history extends beyond the village. Copper ores were prospected in the vicinity of Biegoszów in the 18th century. This was connected with the development of mining and smelting in nearby Leszczyna. The history of the village can therefore be viewed in the wider regional context of past economic developments.

Getting Around and Travel

A local road from Świerzawa to Wilków runs through the Biegoszów valley. For your journey, it is also important to know that there is currently no bus stop in operation in Biegoszów. Take this into account when planning your trip and check the latest status before setting off, as transport services may change.
