Explore Sokołowsko through its spa history, the Kinoteatr Zdrowie and a range of activities. This makes a practical difference when planning your trip: you can focus on culture and architecture or take the hiking and mountain biking options mentioned here into account.
Spa history and the town’s name
The spa and tourism industry developed rapidly in the second half of the 19th century. The climate station and later the Sokołowsko spa became the region’s most important health and tourism centre. Until 1946, the town was called Gorbersdorf. If you come across older references to the place, you can date the former name accordingly.
Cinema and culture
The Kinoteatr Zdrowie was once part of Dr. Brehmer’s sanatorium complex. Today it houses a café, a bookshop, a souvenir shop and a cinema. As an arthouse cinema, it is also a place for exchanging ideas about film, as well as for workshops, lectures and discussions. Check the venue’s programme for current screenings; before your visit, it is also worth checking the operator’s website in case the facilities have changed.
Historic buildings and reconstruction
The buildings reflect a range of historic uses. In Sokołowsko’s spa park is the House of Saint Elisabeth, formerly the Willa Elsa guesthouse. This should be distinguished from the remains of Dr. Brehmer’s neo-Gothic treatment building. The Fundacja Sztuki Współczesnej In Situ is currently rebuilding it; a laboratory for contemporary art is planned there. Check the current status of the reconstruction in advance.
Crafts and trails
The Dzika Owca workshop in Sokołowsko offers workshops in soap-making, ceramics and candle-making. If you would like to include crafts alongside film and local history, these give you some specific options. Check workshop availability directly with the organiser.
The Główny Szlak Sudecki im. Mieczysława Orłowicza passes through Sokołowsko; the local description calls it the region’s most important hiking trail. The Zielona Mieroszów mountain bike route starts in a village car park, not far from Punkt Certyfikowany Roadosno. This gives you two different options to consider: a hiking route that passes through the town and a mountain bike starting point in the village.
An undated tour listing gives Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon as the scheduled times; the meeting point is the Kinoteatr Zdrowie, ul. Główna 36. Check with the organiser in advance to see whether the tour is currently being offered.
Nearby
The artificial Grota Hermana is in a nearby spa park. As an artificial structure, Grota Hermana differs from the historic buildings in the town; it is located in a nearby spa park.
