In Zawonia, church history, culture and sport and leisure activities sit side by side. These include the parish church of St Jadwiga Śląska, a cultural centre in a restored former Protestant church, and the Zielona Strefa Aktywności on the site of a former swimming pool. A green hiking trail also passes through the town. This means you can get to know Zawonia from different perspectives: through its architecture and history, its cultural offerings or a hike.

Churches and Local History

The parish church of St Jadwiga Śląska is a single-nave, brick Baroque church and is listed in the register of monuments. Its Late Baroque interior offers another architectural point of interest: the high altar features an image of St Jadwiga; the altar’s creator is unknown. The church building, interior and altar each provide a different starting point for exploring the town through its architectural history.

The former Protestant church in Zawonia offers another perspective on the town’s religious history. It was restored and converted into the home of the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury at Szkolna 1. Unlike the parish church, which is described as a Baroque church with its altar, the history of this building is shaped by its conversion into a cultural centre. The two churches thus represent different chapters in the town’s history.

The town’s layout is also part of its historical character: traces of an old oval village layout have been preserved in Zawonia. This refers not to a single building, but to the settlement’s traditional form. Together with its location at the foot of the foothills of the Wzgórza Trzebnickie, this broadens the view beyond the churches to encompass the town’s layout and landscape setting.

Culture and Leisure

The Gminny Ośrodek Kultury offers programmes designed to develop manual, vocal, photographic and dance skills for all age groups. If you would like to include these cultural activities in your visit, check the current programme in advance. The venue thus combines the conversion of a former church building with a broad range of cultural activities, spanning craft, vocal and photographic skills as well as dance.

The Zielona Strefa Aktywności offers a different focus. It has been set up as a leisure, sports and cultural venue on the site of a former swimming pool. The site’s former use and its current role as a leisure, sports and cultural venue mark two different chapters in the same place’s history. It therefore complements the cultural perspective of the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury with another local point of interest, although the two venues need not share the same focus.

Hiking Trail and Your Stay

For a walk, a green hiking trail runs through Zawonia from Zawonia to Pęciszów. Its route makes this a specific hiking option, distinct from the town’s cultural and architectural attractions. If hiking is your main consideration when planning your trip, you can treat this trail as a focus in its own right, alongside the town’s history and cultural offerings.

You can therefore tailor your visit to your interests: the parish church offers a connection to Baroque architecture and an altar painting; the cultural centre brings together a former church building and programmes for different age groups; and the hiking trail runs from Zawonia to Pęciszów. Traces of the oval village layout and the town’s location at the foot of the Wzgórza Trzebnickie foothills add settlement history and a connection to the landscape to these options.
