Altheide-Bad (Polanica-Zdrój) offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: Wielka Pieniawa, with naturally occurring carbon dioxide; Park Zdrojowy; a walking route to Piekielna Dolina; a technically challenging MTB trail; and an ethnographic mission museum. Each calls for different planning considerations: for the route, its length and approximate walking time matter; for cycling, the trail rules; and for the museum, the building’s history and its collection.

Wielka Pieniawa and Park Zdrojowy

Wielka Pieniawa water contains naturally occurring carbon dioxide. It is available to drink on site at the pump room in Polanica-Zdrój, and is also sold bottled in shops. If drinking at the pump room is part of your plans, check the operator’s latest information before your trip.

Park Zdrojowy was laid out in 1906. Its promenades lead to the forests and mountains. This gives the park two clearly identifiable aspects: its historical context, marked by the year it was laid out, and its connection to the landscape, reflected in the direction of its promenades. For a stay that does not revolve solely around a single sports trail, this combination of landscaped park and surrounding scenery is a distinct highlight.

On foot or by bike

The Leśny Szlak Wspinaczkowy is 6.8 kilometres long; the walk takes about 2.5 hours. The time estimate is explicitly approximate and applies to walking. Both figures can help with planning your day by answering different questions: the distance describes the length of the route, while the walking time provides a rough guide to how long it takes. The trail leads to Piekielna Dolina, with picturesque steep slopes, rock outcrops and viewpoints. This identifies a specific landscape destination as well as the duration.

Another sporting option is Cross Country Park. The XCO MTB trail has technical sections featuring rock gardens, rocks and tree trunks. The trail is for cyclists only; pedestrian traffic is prohibited. As the rules may change, check them before riding. The walking route and cycling trail therefore have different features to consider when comparing them: the former has an approximate walking time and a destination in Piekielna Dolina, while the latter has technical sections and a clear rule on permitted use.

Monastery history and collection

The Ethnographic Mission Museum is housed in a 19th-century monastery that was converted into a mission house in 1927. The dates relate to two different phases: the 19th century refers to the monastery, while 1927 marks its conversion into a mission house. This distinction helps place the building’s history in context, rather than conflating its construction with its later use.

The museum’s collection includes clothing, jewellery, musical instruments, everyday objects and sculptures collected by missionaries. The building’s history and the collection thus offer two distinct cultural perspectives: the architectural history of the building, and the different groups of objects. If you would like to add a cultural focus to your stay, you can take both aspects of the museum into account when making your choice.
