One way to explore the history of Kamienna Góra is through its weaving heritage. The Muzeum Tkactwa is housed in the historic, unique weavers’ complex along the western row of buildings on the market square. The museum holds weaving and spinning workshops and demonstrations for tourists. Its collections relate to the history of traditional weaving and the textile industry. They include paintings, glass paintings, sculptures dating from the 14th to the 19th century, prints and crafts. Craftsmanship and different artistic genres thus stand side by side.
Churches from Different Eras
The Gothic-Renaissance parish church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Kamienna Góra was built in 1294 and is considered the oldest church in the city; its original form has not been preserved. Another historical layer is represented by the Baroque Roman Catholic church of Matki Bożej Różańcowej. It was originally an 18th-century Protestant Church of Grace and is one of two such churches in Silesia that have survived to this day. The auxiliary church of Bożego Ciała, which also serves as a cemetery chapel, was built in 1560 and took on distinctly Neo-Gothic features following its reconstruction in 1884.
Further Traces of the City’s History
In the north of Kamienna Góra, on the left bank of the Bóbr, are the ruins of the Renaissance Grodztwo Castle and remnants of its former fortifications. The Jewish cemetery on Katowicka Street is another historical landmark: it dates from the late 18th century and is among the best-preserved Jewish cemeteries in Silesia.
Cycling Route and Travel Focus
The Kamiennogórska cycling route offers a different focus. It is more than 8 kilometres long, runs partly through Kamienna Góra and was laid out along a former railway embankment. Its length and the origin of its route give it a distinctive place in travel planning. If you are looking for a hotel in Kamienna Góra, you can choose according to your interests: weaving history, religious architecture and cycling offer different thematic focuses.
In the wider Kamiennogórski destination
The Kamiennogórski area lies in the Central Sudetes, on the border with the Karkonosze, Rudawy Janowickie, Kaczawskie Mountains and Wałbrzyskie Mountains in southwestern Poland, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Kamiennogórski County covers around 396 km²; its landscape includes basins crossed by rivers and streams, mountain ranges, rocks, meadows and forests. Zadzierna is 724 m high and rises above the village of Bukówka; the mountain has numerous hiking trails and climbing routes.
The Kolorowe Jeziorka are also located in Rudawski Landscape Park: three lakes in former pyrite mining pits. Hiking trails lead to them from Wieściszowice and Raszów; the “Zielonym szlakiem przez Kolorowe Jeziorka” educational trail has four stops. The wooden pavilion “Na wodzie,” also known as “Opacki,” stands on stilts in the middle of a small pond in Betlejem near Krzeszów. It was built there between 1674 and 1680.
