Wieruszów lies on both banks of the Prosna, at the mouth of the Niesób. Its riverside setting gives a stay a special character: kayaking opportunities and green trails sit alongside traces of the town’s history.

River routes and trails

The section of the Prosna between Bolesławiec, Wieruszów, Kalisz, and Pyzdry forms a 153-kilometer kayaking route. Kayaks and pedal boats are available at the kayaking landing stage on Kilińskiego Street. Those interested in a route that starts and ends in town can take the green recreation trail “Around Wieruszów”: it is 32.7 kilometers long and begins and ends in Wieruszów. The lengths make the difference between the two routes clear: the designated kayaking route covers 153 kilometers, while the recreation trail is 32.7 kilometers long.

“To the Prosna” also follows the river and passes through the “Dolina Prosny” protected landscape area. In Marianka Park, a walking trail runs along the Brzeźnica River; there is also a pedestrian and cycling bridge. Beyond the bridge is an artificial beach with a beach volleyball court. The park also has an ecological playground, an event stage with a spectator area, a ropes course, and a climbing wall.

Two connecting sections of the “Around Mieleszynek” route run within the municipality of Wieruszów: the northern section runs for 2.5 kilometers there, while the eastern section runs entirely within the municipality for 2.9 kilometers. As local trail conditions can change, it is best to check them before setting out.

Town history between the castle and the monastery

Wieruszów’s market square is a remnant of the medieval town layout and is protected as a historic monument. Remains of the former castle have survived on the left bank of the Prosna, near the mouth of the Niesób. The original castle was probably built around the middle of the 14th century.

The documented history of the Pauline monastery complex in Wieruszów dates back to 1401. It includes the single-nave, brick Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit, completed in 1676. Another layer of the town’s history is reflected in the history of its Jewish community: an independent community was established in Wieruszów in 1810, and a brick synagogue was built in 1850.

The St. Spiritus parish cemetery includes an Orthodox and a Protestant cemetery, as well as brick Catholic and Evangelical Augsburg chapels dating from the late 19th century. It is also home to the tomb of the Pauline monks and historic graves and tombstones dating from 1833 to 1916. The historic heritage therefore encompasses not only individual buildings, but also cemetery grounds and evidence of different religious traditions.

Culture and nearby places

The “Słońce” cinema has been part of the Wieruszowski Dom Kultury since 1992. The Dom Kultury organizes activities for children, young people, and older people. Alongside its historic sites, the town’s cultural life therefore includes a public cultural institution offering activities for different age groups.

Churches and other historic sites in the area around Wieruszów offer distinctive points of interest. The wooden parish Church of St. Wojciech in Cieszęcin was built in 1789 and elevated to the status of the Diocesan Shrine of St. Wojciech for the Diocese of Kalisz in 1995. In Kuźnica Skakawska stands the wooden Church of St. Roch, dating from 1744; its late Renaissance high altar dates from the first half of the 17th century. The ring-shaped fortified settlement site in Kuźnica Skakawska covers about 48 hectares.

Natural monuments also shape the area: two pedunculate oaks next to the Church of St. Roch are designated natural monuments, as is an avenue of 96 red oaks along the local road to Kuźnica Skakawska. In Podzamcze stands a Neo-Gothic Protestant church built in 1888. In Lubczyna, a Neoclassical manor house from 1913 is the centerpiece of the former Sczaniecki estate complex. A 4.7-hectare historic park surrounds the manor house.
