Wieluń's medieval defensive walls were approximately 1,200 to 1,300 metres long. Two gates were part of the original fortifications and marked their western and eastern sides: to the west was the Kaliskie Gate, also called the Dąbrowska Gate, and to the east was the Krakowska Gate, also called the Rudzka Gate. The approximate length gives the fortifications a sense of scale; the two gates add a clear east-west orientation. Those interested in the city's history will encounter not just names here, but also the spatial layout of a medieval fortification.
City History in Walls and Exhibitions
Baszta Męczarnia offers a different historical perspective. The exhibition “W izbie wieluńskiego kata” (In the Chamber of the Wieluń Executioner) in the tower explores the history of Wieluń's executioners and their workshop. Alongside walls and gates, it brings another facet of the city's history into focus: the story of a profession and its workshop. The tower can be visited Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. after purchasing an admission ticket at the museum. Check the visitor arrangements before you travel, as they may change.
Along the Narrow-Gauge Railway Route
Another discovery is the route following the tracks of the Wieluń narrow-gauge railway. Within the Wieluń municipality, it includes a paved stretch of more than four kilometres for cyclists, walkers, horse riders and roller skaters. The stretch is therefore not just for walking. Along the route, information boards describe the railway's history and display historical photographs, giving the route's name a tangible historical context. There are also two tourist service points along the way, with tables, benches and toilets. Check the route conditions before setting out; the facilities at the service points may change.
Parklands with Different Histories
Park Miejski im. Żwirki i Wigury was established in 1852 to a design by district engineer Karol Brochocki. It was laid out on the site of a former moat and the defensive walls, between today's Śląska and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets, along Piłsudskiego Street. The park's origins link a green space with Wieluń's earlier history of fortification.
Lasek Miejski, by contrast, is a forest park north of Wojska Polskiego Street. Its main axis is a walking avenue running parallel to the street. The Wieluński Ogródek Botaniczny (Wieluń Botanical Garden) was established on ten hectares of Lasek Miejski between 1998 and 2000. The dates mark distinct stages of development: the city park dates back to 1852, while the botanical garden was established much later.
Woodland and Nature Conservation
The “Lasek Kurowski” nature reserve was established on 24 November 1983. It protects natural oak-hornbeam stands with fir trees, as well as alder carr and alder floodplain forest. These vegetation types give the reserve a different character from the landscaped parks. Kamieniołomy Kowalskiego is also among Wieluń's notable landscape features: it is a disused quarry at the intersection of Częstochowska and Polna streets.
