Wolbórz combines architectural and church history with firefighting culture and a natural side. Highlights include a Bishop’s Palace, St. Nicholas Parish Church, a historic townhouse and a firefighting history centre. There are also memorials to Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski, a linden avenue and cycling routes around Zalew Sulejowski. You can choose different areas of interest: historic architecture, church history, a firefighting collection or a bike ride in the surrounding area.

Architectural History and Ecclesiastical Heritage

Today’s Bishop’s Palace was built from 1768 to 1773 by Bishop Antoni Ostrowski as a summer residence for the Bishops of Kuyavia. The design is by Franciszek Placidi, a prominent Italian architect. The construction period, patron and intended use give the building a clearly defined historical role: it was intended as a summer residence for the bishops. Alongside church history, the history of the bishops’ residence is therefore another distinct aspect of Wolbórz’s past.

St. Nicholas Parish Church is located on Jagiellonian Square in the centre of Wolbórz. On 6 July 2008, it regained its title as a collegiate church. Its central location makes it a defining feature of the townscape, while the restoration of its title also marks a precisely dated event in its church history. A monument to Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski stands on a green space on the same square.

Wolbórz also has a stone obelisk commemorating the 450th anniversary of the birth of Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski; it was erected in 1953. The historic townhouse at Plac Jagiełły 15 probably dates from 1888. Its present appearance is the result of an extensive renovation carried out from 1996 to 1997. The house thus brings together a probable construction date and a later renovation with clearly documented dates.

Firefighting History as a Subject in Its Own Right

The Pożarnicze Centrum Historyczno-Edukacyjne Ziemi Łódzkiej (Łódź Region Firefighting History and Education Centre) was established in 2007 in collaboration with the local fire brigade. Its collection includes fire brigade banners, numerous medals and association awards, diplomas, certificates for firefighting courses, uniforms and an extensive helmet collection. Its range brings together awards and written records with uniforms and equipment. Firefighting history thus adds a distinct subject area to the town’s architectural and church history.

Linden Avenue and Cycling Routes

An avenue in Wolbórz is lined with several lime trees that are about 250 years old and is recognised as a natural monument. It provides a natural counterpoint to the historic buildings and memorials. Several cycling routes run around the artificial lake Zalew Sulejowski. One of these routes starts in the centre of Wolbórz, on Jagiellonian Square, by the monument to Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski. The square is therefore not only a landmark in the town centre but also the specific starting point of a route. If you would like to include cycling in your stay, you can use this starting point as a guide; the cycling routes relate to the area around the lake.

Location at a Glance

Wolbórz is near Route 8, which connects Warsaw with the southern cities of Wrocław and Katowice. This road connection provides a broader geographic reference point when planning your stay. In town, the different themes—from architectural history and the firefighting collection to the linden avenue and cycling routes—offer ideas for deciding what you would like to focus on.
