Zabawa combines tangible building history with a striking geological exposure. A wooden house dating from 1900, former buildings belonging to a manor complex, and Piaski bogucickie offer different perspectives on the place: here, building styles and their later use; there, an exposure at a former sand quarry. These topics can be considered separately when choosing a destination, rather than combined into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

Wooden House and Manor Buildings

The wooden house at Zabawa 43 dates from 1900. The former outbuildings of the manor complex at Zabawa 101 represent an earlier building phase: they date from the second half of the 19th century, were renovated in the 20th and 21st centuries, and are now used as residential buildings. Their construction dates and current use are equally part of the history of the complex.

The former granary belonging to the manor complex at Zabawa 2 also dates from the second half of the 19th century. It was converted in the 20th century, renovated in the 20th and 21st centuries, and is now also used as a residential building. Comparing the two addresses highlights a distinction within the manor complex: Zabawa 101 comprises former outbuildings, while Zabawa 2 is identified as a granary. The wooden house at Zabawa 43 adds a distinct building type dating from 1900 to this building history.

The dates place different emphasis on different aspects. The history of the manor buildings spans several phases of conversion and renovation, up to their present-day residential use; for the wooden house, the year 1900 is the key date. Zabawa therefore offers more than a single historical date, without requiring the buildings to be grouped into one uniform architectural style.

Piaski bogucickie and the Zabawka Valley

Piaski bogucickie shifts the focus from buildings to geology. This artificial geological exposure is located in a former sand quarry on the steep, high slope of the Zabawka stream valley. It is about 400 metres from the main road. The name thus stands for a different aspect of the place than its historical buildings: here, the former sand quarry and the location on the valley slope shape the description.

These two topics are clearly distinct when planning your own trip. Those interested in building history will find specific addresses and details about both former and current uses. Piaski bogucickie, by contrast, offers a geological point of interest, centred on the artificial exposure and its location in the valley. The distance of around 400 metres from the main road describes its location; it is not a walking time.

Culture in Wieliczka

The destination of Wieliczka offers further, distinct cultural highlights. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines”. The underground Miners’ Route includes 7 to 14 mining chambers in the rugged workings around the oldest surviving Regis Shaft and is up to 2 kilometres long. In addition to Zabawa’s architectural and geological themes, Wieliczka therefore has its own focus on mining history.

Churches and their furnishings reveal further historical periods in Wieliczka. The wooden Church of St Sebastian was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish Church of St Clement was built in 1381 with funds donated by the townspeople; architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved inside. The Franciscan Church and Franciscan monastery were built in the first half of the 17th century and were the first stone church of the Lesser Poland Reformers’ Province. The dates therefore range from surviving medieval elements to a church built in the 17th century.

Routes and Visit Planning in Wieliczka

Routes in the destination of Wieliczka also differ in type and course. The yellow route is a walking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route forms a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. The details to compare are therefore different: for the yellow route, the two endpoints and the option to walk or cycle are specified; for the red route, its loop format and length. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific trip.

There is also an important dated notice to bear in mind when planning your visit: on 8 September 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard were closed for renovation work. The work is expected to continue until the end of 2028. Check the latest information before your visit.
