Nowe Brzesko offers a cultural and historical glimpse into different eras: at Plac Wolności, preserved 18th-century salt stores stand alongside a former Orthodox church building dating from 1908; on Stary Rynek, there is a statue of Saint Florian from the 18th century. Nearby, to the east of the town, Hebdów offers medieval architectural and monastic history. This range of periods can help you choose the focus of your stay.

Plac Wolności: Changing Uses

The preserved 18th-century salt stores stand at Plac Wolności, formerly known as Plac Solny. In the mid-19th century, the stores were converted into barracks and stables for the Tsarist Border Guard. This sequence makes the square interesting to anyone following the changing uses of historic buildings: the stores’ original purpose was followed by a military use. Today, the former salt stores house rooms belonging to the GOK. The preserved buildings therefore reveal several periods in their history.

Also at Plac Wolności stands a former Orthodox church building, constructed in 1908. Today it houses the Miejsko-Gminne Centrum Kultury i Promocji. Comparing it with the salt stores highlights two different former functions and present-day uses, without confusing the two buildings.

A Monument on Stary Rynek

On Stary Rynek stands an 18th-century statue of Saint Florian. Alongside the stores, it provides another landmark from the same period. By comparison, the church building at Plac Wolności dates from 1908, while the stores were converted in the mid-19th century. These dates help place the town’s historical landmarks in context.

Hebdów: Medieval Layers

Hebdów lies east of Nowe Brzesko and is part of the destination’s surrounding area. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of Saints Peter and Paul dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its surviving architectural features include the lower levels, crypts and parts of the main structure dating from the mid-13th and early 14th centuries. The naves, presbytery and furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. These different features place the church across several centuries, rather than reducing it to a single construction date.

The Premonstratensian, or Norbertine, monastery founded in 1149 established Hebdów’s reputation. A statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, is also located in Hebdów. The founding of the monastery, the statue and the church’s architectural features mark different periods and complement the predominantly more recent historical traces in Nowe Brzesko.

Compare Historical Highlights

If you are planning a culturally focused stay, you can choose what to prioritise: the landmarks mentioned in Nowe Brzesko mainly date from the 18th to the early 20th century, while Hebdów adds medieval architectural and monastic history. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether Nowe Brzesko’s local history, or the landmarks in nearby Hebdów as well, should be a particular focus of your trip.
