In Niedzica, exhibitions on the culture of the Spisz region meet water-based activities and cycling routes of varying lengths. Pastoral traditions are also part of the local heritage. When planning your stay, it is worth deciding first whether you would like to focus more on culture, activities on the water or longer routes.
Granary, pastoral traditions and collections
The wooden granary, dating from the 18th century, is about 150 metres from Niedzica Castle. Its ethnographic exhibition is devoted to the culture of the Spisz region. From 1 May to 30 September, the granary is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; it is closed outside this period. As it operates seasonally, check the opening hours before your visit.
Another way to explore local culture is through the Bacówka Edukacyjna. Built in 2019, this small centre presents the history and culture of pastoralism and combines environmental and cultural education. The bacówka in Niedzica also displays authentic equipment used in pastoralism and in the production of regional products such as Oscypek and Bundz.
The Wozownia in Niedzica-Zamek displays historic horse-drawn vehicles from 1900 to 1939, including carriages and sleighs. The Park Miniatur offers a different perspective: its models of notable buildings in the Podtatrze region are made to a scale of 1:20. The buildings represented include the castles of Dunajec, Lubowla, Orawa, Czorsztyn and Pieniny, the Red Monastery, the church in Dębno, and the manor houses of the Tetmajer and Uznański families.
The dam is another of Niedzica’s notable structures. It is Poland’s tallest earth dam with a central clay core, measuring 56 metres in height and 404 metres in length.
Water activities and cycling routes
The Zamajerz Marina in Niedzica rents out kayaks and pedal boats, offers moorings and yacht and rowing-boat charters, and organises sightseeing trips. A special attraction there is the Pumpabike, a hydrofoil on Lake Czorsztyńskie. The availability of these activities may change, so check in advance. The landing stage for the Biała Dama, Harnaś and Dunajec sightseeing boats is directly below the castle in Niedzica.
Two river areas are mentioned for kayaking: from Polana Sosny in Niedzica, routes head upstream on the Dunajec and on the Białka between Jurgów and Czarna Góra. As these routes follow different waterways and start from different points, they should not be considered one continuous route.
The three cycling routes differ mainly in length and course. The approximately 40-kilometre route over the ridge of the Pieniny Spiskie starts and ends in Niedzica. It follows paved roads, is suitable for any type of bicycle and takes about four to five hours.
The approximately 38-kilometre cycling route along the Dunajec Gorge runs from Niedzica via the Red Monastery in Slovakia, Szczawnica, Krościenko, Grywałd, Krośnica and Czorsztyn, before returning to Niedzica. The Mała Pętla Zamagurza is longer, at 48 kilometres. It also starts and ends in Niedzica and passes, among other places, through Kacwin, Wielka Frankowa, Osturnia, Zdziarska-Przełęź, Jurgów, Rzepiska, Łapszanka and Łapsze Niżne.
Horse-riding trails and cross-country ski trail
The two horse-riding trails described also differ in length and course. The 15-kilometre trail from Frydman to Niedzica passes through Siodło, the Drożyska Valley, the Baniska clearings, 725-metre-high Barwinkowa Góra, Cisówka and Tabor, ending at Niedzica Castle. The 11-kilometre trail from Niedzica to Kacwin runs through the centre of Niedzica, past the lower station of the lift at Polana Sosny and the Chapel of St Rozalia, and ends at the Kacwin–Wielka Frankowa border crossing.
There is a cross-country ski trail at the sports ground in Niedzica, on Św. Rozalii Street. Together with the cycling and horse-riding trails, it expands the range of activities; the route information varies according to the type of transport, length and stated course.
This makes it possible to choose a destination based on the activities you would like to include in your stay.
