The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross brings the history of wooden construction in Ochotnica Dolna to life in a single building. Also found here are a monument in the town centre, scattered groups of traditional wooden buildings and trail connections in the wider region. For your trip, you can therefore consider local history and regional orientation as distinct areas of interest.

Discover the church’s wooden architecture

The church was built in 1816 from larch wood on the site of an earlier church and has been beautifully restored. It is an oriented religious building constructed using the log-building method; its tower is built using a post-and-beam structure. The two construction methods give the wooden building different forms: in log construction, beams are stacked horizontally, while in post-and-beam construction, vertical posts carry the load. The church thus combines two clearly defined construction methods in a single building.

The architecture also includes rich interior furnishings and decoration. The church’s significance therefore lies not only in its year of construction and materials, but also in the design of its interior. If you are interested in sacred wooden architecture, this building offers a tangible example where construction methods and furnishings can be viewed together.

Remembrance and traditional wooden buildings

The monument designed by Henryk Burzec stands in the centre of Ochotnica Dolna. It was erected in 1964 and commemorates the pacification action of 23 December 1944, known as “Bloody Christmas.” The dates refer to different events: 1944 is the year of the commemorated action, while 1964 is the year the monument was erected.

In addition to this individual memorial site, traditional wooden buildings have been preserved in scattered groups, including in the settlements of Gardonie and Kapłony and by the Lubański stream. Their dispersed locations distinguish these groups of buildings from a single structure such as the church or monument. The groups include barns with overhanging roofs and richly painted chinking between the beams. These details give the wooden buildings their own distinctive architectural character.

Together, these different places offer distinct ways to explore the history of Ochotnica Dolna: the church represents sacred wooden architecture, the monument commemorates a specific event, and the scattered groups of buildings showcase traditional building forms at several named locations. This distinction helps keep the local themes separate rather than combining them into a single attraction.

Regional trails and a dated cycling connection

In the wider region, a trail runs from Turbacz via the yellow and blue trails through the Kamienica Valley, past “Papieżówka” and on to Przełęcz Przysłop. There it connects with the Papieski Szlak Zagórzańsko-Limanowski. Another section of the described trail passes through Ochotnica Dolna. This route covers a different scale from the local architectural and memorial sites, placing the town in a broader regional context.

There is also a cycling connection associated with a specific date. On 28 October 2021, Kasia Niewiadoma, village head Tadeusz Królczyk and contractor Cezary Szafraniec unveiled the first sign for the “Kasia Niewiadoma – Ochotnica Challenge” cycle route at the square by Ochotnica Dolna Municipal Office. The unveiling of the sign is a historical reference in its own right, alongside the older history of architecture and remembrance.

When choosing what to focus on, you can therefore distinguish between architecture and local history on the one hand, and the trail connections of the wider region on the other.
