Situated along the middle course of the Mszanka and on the northern foothills of the Gorce Mountains, Mszana Górna combines a distinctive landscape setting with historic village character. Numerous historic Zagórze farmsteads can still be found in the village; the municipality describes it as a large summer resort village. Two specific points are therefore central to planning a trip: its location at the edge of the mountains and its rural heritage.
Location between the Mszanka and the Gorce Mountains
Mszana Górna lies along the middle course of the Mszanka and on the northern foothills of the Gorce Mountains. To the southeast, the village is surrounded by the wooded heights of Wszołowa (624 m), Ogorzała (806 m), and Ostra (780 m). The river setting, northern foothills, and southeastern heights mark distinct geographic features. When locating the village on a map, these directions can be distinguished: the three heights surround Mszana Górna from the southeast, while its mountain setting is on the northern Gorce foothills. At 806 metres, Ogorzała is the highest of the three heights, while Wszołowa, at 624 metres, is the lowest; Ostra, at 780 metres, lies between them. The three figures also provide a comparable sense of their elevations. The difference between the highest and lowest heights is 182 metres.
Rural heritage and village history
Numerous historic Zagórze farmsteads can still be found in Mszana Górna. Several farmsteads are therefore part of the village’s historical profile. For choosing a village destination, this is a different point of reference from its landscape setting: it concerns the history of the place itself. The municipality describes Mszana Górna as a large summer resort village. This description complements the farmstead tradition with a seasonal aspect and offers another perspective on the village’s character.
The village’s history also includes two dates related to the church: an independent parish was established in Mszana Górna in 1958, and the church in the village was built in the mid-20th century. The parish’s establishment has an exact year, while the church’s construction is dated more broadly. Since 1958 falls in the middle of the century, the two dates are consistent, but refer to different events.
The LKS “Witów” stadium is located in Mszana Górna.
Season and accommodation choices
The farmsteads, parish, and church point to the village’s history; the Mszanka, the Gorce foothills, and the three wooded heights describe its location. In winter, visitors can use a ski lift in nearby Lubomierz. Check before your trip whether it will be operating during your stay. The lift is therefore a separate seasonal feature outside the village, while history and landscape are characteristics of Mszana Górna itself.
