Mstów lies on the Tarnawka stream in the central part of Jodłownik municipality, a few kilometres north of Jodłownik. This location places the village within the municipality. The history of the manor and the local legend offer two different ways to explore the destination: one through ownership and heritage history, the other through a tale of an event. This makes it possible to place Mstów in context both geographically and according to your own interest in local history.

Early Mentions and Changes of Ownership

The earliest known mention of Mstów dates from 1408 and is held in the archives of Szczyrzyc Abbey. In 1505, Mstów belonged to a benefactor of the Cistercian monastery in Szczyrzyc. The two dates shed light on different aspects of the village’s history: one marks an early mention, while the other connects ownership of the village with a person and their relationship with the monastery.

Towards the end of the 16th century, Mstów came under the rule of Stanisław Zborowski of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms. A few decades later, the village passed into the ownership of the Gąsiorowski family of the Pilawa coat of arms. In the 19th century, the Popiel family took over the estate and manor in Mstów. This sequence distinguishes between rule over and ownership of the village on the one hand, and the estate and manor on the other. It also spans several centuries: from the late 16th century to the Popiel family’s takeover in the 19th century.

Manor Park and Local Tradition

The manor park was entered in the register of historic monuments on 23 August 1988 under number A-525. A decision dated 1 September 2015 removed part of the park and part of the visual buffer zone from the register. The register’s history therefore includes both the original listing and a later partial amendment. The fact that only parts of the park and visual buffer zone were removed is important: the delisting did not affect the entire park or the entire zone.

Near the former manor stands a wayside chapel with a figure of the Sorrowful Christ. A local legend tells how a snake charmer died while luring snakes out of the manor; the manor owner is said to have built a chapel at that spot. The legend sits alongside the dated details about mentions and changes of ownership as a tale. Those interested in local history can thus distinguish between specific historical dates and a tradition whose outcome is explicitly uncertain.

Mstów as a Travel Choice

These topics offer different points of interest when choosing a destination. Are you most interested in the sequence of ownership changes, the history of the manor park, or the local legend? This question can help you decide on the historical focus of your stay without conflating the different aspects. A local legend tells a story about a place differently from a sequence of dated ownership changes; both can shape your interest in Mstów.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Mstów, you can first decide which of these historical aspects interests you most. You can then choose accommodation to suit your personal requirements. This keeps choosing a destination and looking for a holiday apartment as two related but distinct steps in planning your trip.
