For a trip to Ojców, you can focus on cultural history and archaeology, or on the rocky landscape and nature. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, this distinction can help you tailor your trip to your interests. The striking sites tell different stories: from an archaeological site and a medieval castle to rock formations in the Prądnik Valley.

Rocky Landscape in the Prądnik Valley

Brama Krakowska is one of the rock gates in Ojców National Park. It lies in the Prądnik Valley and marks the end of the Wąwóz za Krakowską Bramą gorge where it opens onto the valley. Jonaszówka offers a different perspective: the rock is 20 metres high and is also located in Ojców National Park, in the Prądnik Valley. Its summit features a viewpoint overlooking Ojców and the surrounding area. The contrast is clear: Brama Krakowska is defined by the rock gate and its relationship to the gorge, while Jonaszówka is known for its height and viewpoint.

Another distinctive feature is Źródło Miłości: its water flows into a small pool with a heart-shaped bottom carved out of the rock. Here, what matters is neither its location relative to a gorge nor a viewpoint, but the unusual shape of the pool.

Cultural History and Archaeology

Jaskinia Ciemna (Ojcowska) cave is considered one of Poland’s most valuable archaeological sites. Its archaeological significance provides a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside the landscape features. Work on the so-called Ogrojec in front of the cave included a new footbridge, information boards and a reconstruction of a Neanderthal camp.

Ojców Castle dates back to the 13th century. Its origins are linked to King Casimir the Great’s fortification works in the second half of the 14th century. It was badly damaged during the Swedish Deluge and restored in 1660. Today, it is a ruin and a medieval landmark of the town. The “Na Wodzie” Chapel is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Worker and was established in 1901 in a former bathhouse at the spa resort. While the castle reflects a sequence of expansion, damage and restoration, the chapel’s story centres on the conversion of the former bathhouse to a new use.

Trails and Nature

The blue Szlak Warowni Jurajskich trail runs alongside the red hiking trail through the Prądnik Valley via Ojców to Grodzisko and Skała. Their shared route is a practical landmark for navigating these trails. Before setting out, check the national park’s current visitor notices for temporary trail changes.

Ojców National Park’s nature exhibition provided information about the park’s geology, prehistory, fauna and flora. Ogród Ojcowski features endangered species as well as species characteristic of the park’s typical woodland communities, meadows and xerothermic grasslands. The two nature-related attractions have different focuses: the exhibition provided an overview of Earth’s history and nature, while the garden highlights species from specific habitats.
