Among Mokrzyska’s distinctive features are the “Romeo i Julia” poplar trees and a historic Marian statue erected in 1865. Cycle Route 3 also passes through the village on its return leg. The natural monument, sculpture, and route provide different points of interest when planning a stay.

“Romeo i Julia” Natural Monument

The “Romeo i Julia” poplar trees are protected as a natural monument and are considered a tourist attraction in Brzesko County. The larger trunk measures 385 cm in circumference, measured at a height of 130 cm. A second, smaller tree grows from the same roots. This highlights two aspects of their growth: the circumference of the larger trunk and the trees’ shared root base.

The “Romeo i Julia” tree was designated a natural monument in 2009. This is distinct from the Bratucicki Protected Landscape Area, which includes Mokrzyska. The designations refer to different levels: the named natural monument and the landscape area to which the village belongs. “Romeo i Julia” is also a stop on the discovery route through the municipality of Brzesko.

The Marian Statue on Wiślana Street

A historic statue of the Mother of God with the Child Jesus stands on municipal land on Wiślana Street. The street leads toward Szczurowa. The statue was erected in 1865; its creator was Franciszek Samek of Bochnia, who was considered a respected sculptor at the time.

The image can be recognized by its individual attributes: Mary holds a rosary, while the Child Jesus holds a globe with a cross in front of it. The date and creator provide a historical context, while the rosary and globe give concrete detail to the statue’s imagery. Together, these details describe both the statue’s creation and its visible features.

Cycle Route 3 through Mokrzyska

After passing through Wokowice, Cycle Route 3 runs through Mokrzyska on its return leg. The route description makes the village a point of reference without implying the rest of the route. If you are planning to ride the route, check the latest route information before setting out.

More topics in the wider destination of Brzesko

The wider destination of Brzesko offers cultural and landscape features of its own, complementing the picture of Mokrzyska. The Church of St. James the Apostle in Brzesko has a historic section dating from the mid-15th century. The town hall is an eclectic building with a four-storey tower and was built in 1909–1910. The Regional Museum in Brzesko displays two bourgeois interiors, landscapes, portraits, and local-history memorabilia. In this urban context, religious architecture, town-hall architecture, and collection items offer distinct points of interest.

The Brzesko–Okocim Brewery complex, the surrounding buildings, and the neighboring palace and park complex of the Goetz-Okocimski family are also among the historical features of the wider destination. Their development began in 1845 and continued into the 1930s. In Okocim, an English-style landscape park dating from 1900 surrounds the palace; native and exotic trees and shrubs grow there. The combination of industrial history, architecture, and designed landscape differs from the individual natural and cultural features of Mokrzyska.

Bocheniec is also part of Brzesko’s landscape and historical context. At 394 meters above sea level, it is the highest elevation in the Brzesko area. The eastern rampart remains of a hillfort of the Wiślan, dating from the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, have been preserved there. The rampart remains are about 4 meters high and 18 meters wide at the base. These measurements and the historical attribution give the site a different profile from the “Romeo i Julia” natural monument.
