Brzesko combines urban history with religious sites and places of Jewish remembrance. Around the Market Square, the town hall façade, the statue of St Florian and other buildings reveal different chapters of local history. The wider Brzesko destination offers more to explore: historic architecture, landscapes, and routes for hiking and cycling. You can tailor your stay to the things that interest you most.

Market Square and the Townscape

The former town hall of Brzesko was built in 1909–1910. A mosaic of the griffin from the town coat of arms adorns its south façade. The Market Square is also home to a Baroque statue of St Florian, erected in 1731. The town’s residents donated it after another town fire.

The buildings around the Market Square also tell the story of the townscape’s development: they were built after the great fire of 1904 and feature Neo-Renaissance, eclectic and Art Nouveau elements. The town hall mosaic, monument and variety of styles offer several specific ways to explore Brzesko’s architectural history.

Sacred Sites and Places of Remembrance

On 6 October 2018, St James’s parish church in Brzesko was elevated to the status of a sanctuary dedicated to St James the Apostle on the Via Regia. The designation links the church with St James the Apostle and the Via Regia. Dni Jakubowe takes place every July in Brzesko and attracts pilgrims from different parts of Poland. If you want to plan your trip around a particular edition, check the dates for that year.

The Jewish cemetery on Czarnowiejska Street was established around 1824. The rabbis buried there include Arie Leibusz, who died in 1846, and Towi Lipschitz, who died in 1912. In the wider Brzesko destination, the cemetery was entered into the register of monuments in 1992. These details give the site a distinct place in the region’s Jewish history.

Architecture and Culture in the Wider Brzesko Destination

The Church of St James the Apostle in Brzesko has a historic section dating from the mid-15th century. Another architectural highlight is the Goetz family palace in Okocim: it was built from 1898 to 1900 to designs by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer. An English-style landscape park dating from 1900 surrounds the palace, with native and exotic trees and shrubs growing there.

The built heritage of the wider destination also includes the urban and architectural complex of the Brzesko–Okocim Brewery, with its surrounding buildings, as well as the adjacent Goetz-Okocimski family palace and park complex. These developments were built from 1845 onwards and expanded through the 1930s. The Regional Museum in Brzesko displays two bourgeois interiors, landscapes, portraits and objects recalling local history. Alongside individual buildings, museum collections are another cultural highlight to explore.
