In Dobrzejewice, sacred architectural history and local remembrance offer two distinct ways of exploring the townâs history. The Church of St. Lawrence combines a Neo-Gothic brick structure with Rococo furnishings; the former cholera cemetery is associated with a statue of Saint Tekla and a Karawaka cross. A dated hike and an Orlik sports field add opportunities for physical activity to the cultural themes. The options thus range from architecture and furnishings to a specific sporting attraction.
The Church of St. Lawrence: Architectural History and Furnishings
The Church of St. Lawrence was built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1888 and 1893. It replaced an older wooden church, probably dating from the 14th century, which was destroyed toward the end of the 19th century. The townâs history thus brings together a probably medieval wooden structure and a brick building from the late 19th century. The church is single-naved; the term describes a building with one main nave and identifies its basic layout. The building once also had a tower, but it was destroyed during the First World War. The predecessor building, the construction of the church and the later loss of the tower mark three stages in its architectural history.
The furnishings include a Rococo high altar from the 18th century and two Rococo side altars from the second half of the 18th century. The high altar comes from the Cathedral of WĆocĆawek. Its upper section features a painting of Saint Lawrence from the late 18th century, adorned with embossed silverwork. âEmbossedâ refers to a metalworking technique in which silver is shaped in relief; the silverwork thus brings a craft technique into the description of the altarpiece.
The two side altars are dedicated to Saint Anthony and Saint Anne. Compared with the high altar, their dedications offer a distinct point of interest; their date is also specified more precisely as the second half of the 18th century. A Rococo pulpit and a Rococo baptismal font complete the furnishings. The church thus features various elements that illustrate the Rococo style and sacred furnishings: altars, a pulpit and a baptismal font.
Memorials at the Former Cholera Cemetery
The former cholera cemetery was located beside a forest; the graves had no headstones. A statue of Saint Tekla returned to its former site after almost 80 years. A memorial cross with two crossbars, known as a Karawaka, was also erected there. For the statue, the long interval before its return is part of the siteâs history; the cross is distinguished by its two crossbars. Alongside the cemeteryâs former purpose, these represent two distinct aspects of remembrance: the return of the statue of the saint and the erection of the cross.
