The Camino de Santiago runs from Gozdawa towards Duszno through Izdby. This gives the village a specific connection to a pilgrimage route. If you are looking for hotels in Izdby, you can use this route connection as a guide to the character of your stay. Check the conditions for the stage you plan to hike before travelling.

The Camino de Santiago and its surroundings

In the immediate surroundings of the destination, the Camino de Santiago passes the Church of St. Dorothy and a historic 19th-century forge in Duszno. Sacred architecture and a testament to historic craftsmanship thus stand side by side along the route. This is also of interest to travellers who want to explore churches and the history of crafts as well as the pilgrimage route itself.

Further afield in the region, the section of the Camino de Santiago from Mogilno to Gniezno via Trzemeszno and Niechanowo was officially opened on 20 April 2007. It provides a distinct historical point of reference within the region’s pilgrimage history.

Churches and history in Mogilno

The former Benedictine monastery in Mogilno provides a different cultural and historical focus. The monastery church and buildings were constructed by Benedictine monks in the 11th century on a small hill on the northeastern shore of Lake Mogilno. King Bolesław Śmiały founded the former Benedictine Church of St. John the Evangelist, together with the monastery buildings, in 1065. The church retains its original form as a Romanesque basilica and features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque details. The western crypt is described as one of only three crypts of its kind in Europe.

The Church of St. James the Apostle (Fara) in Mogilno offers another historical point of reference: the Gothic church dates from 1511. Its main altar features an 18th-century painting of St. James the Elder. Together with the monastery church, it represents two distinct historical points of reference, without reducing the buildings’ history to a single period.

Museum, cycling routes and park

The Mogilno Region Museum brings together several perspectives on regional history. The permanent exhibition “History of the Mogilno Region” includes guild documents and historic banners from 1919, 1923, 1927, 1929 and 1946. The exhibition “Prehistory of the Mogilno Region” spans a long period: it features tools and everyday and ritual objects from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages through the Middle Ages and into modern times. Another exhibition focuses on folk culture and folk art, crafts, and the everyday life of the region’s inhabitants.

Two municipal cycling route suggestions can be distinguished by length and course. The approximately 14-kilometre TRASA nr 8 (MDW) runs around Lake Wiecanowskie and starts and ends in Mogilno. The approximately 28-kilometre TRASA nr 1 (MSK) connects Mogilno with Kalwaria Mogileńska and then returns to Mogilno. The routes are currently unmarked; bear this in mind when planning and check the course before setting off.

Mogilno’s town-centre park, with its summer amphitheatre and fountain, offers another place to visit. The park has a fountain and renovated paths with new lighting. The summer amphitheatre has 300 seats and is used for concerts and outdoor events in summer. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the programme in advance.
