Mogilno combines a medieval monastery complex by the lake with practical options for days spent exploring culture and cycling. Two suggested circular cycling routes start and end in the town, but differ considerably in length. You can plan your stay around architectural history, summer events or a route of your own choosing.

Monastery Complex and Church Art

The Church of St. John the Apostle and the complex of former monastery buildings occupy a peninsula on Lake Mogileńskie. Benedictines built the monastery and church in the 11th century; three crypts lie beneath the church. The location, building history and crypts give the ensemble several distinct architectural points of interest. The main altar of the Parish Church of St. James the Greater features an 18th-century painting of the church’s and parish’s patron saint. For visitors who want to combine sacred art with architectural history, these offer two specific themes to explore during a stay in Mogilno.

Historic Buildings in Town

The secular buildings also reflect different styles and periods. Mogilno Town Hall is a 19th-century eclectic building; its Gothic Revival design is reminiscent of Western European castles. The former Spółdzielczy Bank building dates from the early 20th century and was built in the Venetian style. Together, these two examples offer a comparison between a Gothic Revival town hall and a building in the Venetian style.

The denominational cemetery was established in 1816 and contains the tomb monument of the priest Piotr Wawrzyniak. It adds another specific place of remembrance to the town’s historic buildings. The town hall, former bank building and cemetery each have a different focus: the architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries on the one hand, and a cemetery with a history dating back to 1816 on the other.

Town Park and Summer Events

The town park is in the center of Mogilno. Its summer amphitheater has seating for 300 spectators and hosts summer concerts and outdoor events. The park is a fitting complement to the town’s historic attractions if you would also like to plan your stay around an event. If so, check in advance when the concert or event you’re interested in is taking place.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

For a shorter route, consider suggested Route No. 8 (MDW): it is about 14 km long, goes around Lake Wiecanowskie, and starts and ends in Mogilno. Suggested Route No. 1 is longer, at about 28 km; it also starts and ends in Mogilno and passes through Kalwaria Mogileńska. You can compare the routes by their length and destination without assuming that one is more difficult than the other.

Both cycling routes are suggestions and are currently not signposted. Plan your route before setting out. The information on length, start and end points, and the places mentioned helps distinguish the two options: Route No. 8 goes around Lake Wiecanowskie, while Route No. 1 passes through Kalwaria Mogileńska.

The Historic Mogilno–Orchowo Railway Line

Another way to explore the area via a historic transport link is the 20.8 km Mogilno–Orchowo railway line. It includes 25 viaducts and bridges, is navigable and is occasionally used for trolley rides. The line’s length and number of structures give it a character of its own; occasional rides offer a different kind of outing from the suggested cycling routes. If you want to include a trolley ride as a fixed part of your itinerary, confirm the date in advance.
