An approximately 200-year-old oak is a distinctive natural feature of Strzelewo. It grows in a forest in Strzelewo managed by the Kruszyn Forest District, which is based in Zielonczyn. The oak is listed in the register of natural monuments. Its measurements make the tree tangible: 18 metres tall, with a crown 17 metres wide and a trunk circumference of 340 centimetres at breast height. With a difference of just one metre, its height and crown width can be directly compared; the circumference adds a separate measurement of the trunk. Its age is given only approximately, while the three measurements are specified precisely.

Castle history and park trees

The castle in Strzelewo was built in 1868 in the Neo-Gothic style, extended in 1910 and remodelled in 1968–1969; during this remodelling, it lost its stylistic features. This sequence distinguishes the original construction, the extension and the later alteration. The loss of its stylistic features is a separate part of the building’s history: it marks the difference between the original Neo-Gothic design and subsequent changes. Horse chestnuts, Norway maples, European beeches and black locusts grow in the park by the castle. A spreading copper beech is particularly striking. The park’s flora may change over time. The park’s trees complement the dated building history with a nature-focused perspective, featuring several tree species and one notable specimen.

Historical traces in Strzelewo

On the slope beside the road from Strzelewo to Ugoda lies a Protestant cemetery dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It covers 0.07 hectares and is completely overgrown with lilac; no tombstones remain. Strzelewo also has a historic wayside shrine and a historic distillery. These are different historical points of interest: a cemetery dated to around the turn of the century, as well as the wayside shrine and distillery as additional features of the area’s history.

The green-marked cycling route

For cyclists, the green-marked nature-trail cycling route is another option to consider when planning. It forms a circular route through Strzelewo and other places in the central and southern parts of Sicienko municipality. In Strzelewo, it crosses national road 10; it then leads to the Kruszyn nature reserve and along a field track to the forest ranger’s lodge in Zielonczyn. The route takes you beyond individual local sights, following a sequence through several places in the municipality. The route description was last changed in 2021. Check the route locally before setting out, as route descriptions may change.

The geographical scale also matters when planning your trip: the oak, castle, park and historical traces anchor nature and cultural interests in Strzelewo, while the circular route leads through other parts of the municipality. This gives you the choice between focusing on the local area and planning a cycling trip over a wider geographical area. The local sights and the circular route thus offer different ways to include Strzelewo in your trip.
