Śrem stretches across both banks of the Warta River. Along the river runs the Promenada nad Wartą, a walking and cycling path. The buildings also tell the story of different eras: the town hall dates from 1838, while the star vaults of the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary date from the 15th or 16th century. Śrem also offers cultural attractions at the museum and cinema to help you plan your visit.
The Warta River and the landscape
Śrem’s location on both banks and the path along the water are two distinct points of reference: one describes the extent of the town, while the other is a specific walking and cycling path along the Warta. Lake Grzymisławskie lies south of Śrem. It is situated in a narrow, deep trough that is 7.5 kilometres long. This distinguishes the river area within the town from the lake to the south; both are distinct geographical features of Śrem.
Town hall, church and Franciscan complex
Śrem’s town hall was built in 1838. Its style is based on the “round-arched” style common in the 19th century and incorporates Renaissance and Classicist influences. The year of construction and the stylistic classification offer two different perspectives: the year marks when the town hall was built, while the style description places it within a broader architectural movement.
Different architectural details stand out at the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as Fara. Its tower is 62 metres high, and the star vaults date from the 15th or 16th century. Unlike the town hall, for which an exact year of construction is given, the vaults are dated to a period spanning two centuries. The tower’s height and the period to which the vaults date describe two different aspects of the church building.
The Baroque Franciscan complex dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It comprises a church and a former Franciscan monastery. Together with the town hall and parish church, the complex adds another chapter to Śrem’s architectural history, with the church and former monastery identified as its components.
Museum and cultural programme
“Niedziela w Muzeum” takes place once a month from 12:00 to 16:00 and is associated with a vernissage or an occasional event. As the recurring date may change, check the latest dates before your visit. The format combines a set monthly time slot with a changing occasion.
Another option is “Wystawa Plenerowa”, an open-air exhibition in the garden of Muzeum Śremskie. It is open year-round from 7:00 to 21:00; opening hours may change. So check the latest times in advance. The exhibition and the monthly museum event differ both in format and in their stated visiting hours.
Kinoteatr Słonko is also part of Śrem’s cultural offering. It presents premiere films, special events and screenings of broadcasts. The DKF Klaps film discussion club is also based there. The cinema and museum therefore represent different kinds of cultural programme: film screenings and broadcasts on the one hand, and exhibitions and monthly events on the other.
