Discover Schneidemühl through a wide range of interests: protected nature, walking and cycling routes, and art and history. The Kuźnik protected landscape area lies in the north-west of the city of Piła and has been protected since 1959. Rare plant and animal species are found there, especially birds and bats. Kuźnik is accessible year-round and has a marked network of tourist trails. The area therefore offers a distinct focus on nature that is not limited to a single group of animals.

Nature and trails around Piła

The “Nietoperze w Starrym Browarze” area in Piła offers a different perspective on nature conservation. It is considered nationally significant as a wintering site for bats. By comparison, Kuźnik focuses on rare plants and animals in general, with birds and bats highlighted in particular. Visitors interested in nature will therefore find two distinct focal points: a protected landscape area with marked trails, and an area whose significance is explicitly linked to bats overwintering there.

For a break with a walk in the city, there is also Park Miejski im. Stanisława Staszica. It covers 11.63 hectares and serves as a meeting place and a spot for walks. A separate, clearly specified hiking option is the marked Rezerwat Kuźnik–Piła Koszyce MZK trail, which is six kilometres long. This figure describes the route’s length, not the time it takes an individual to walk it. This lets you distinguish a walk in the city park from a marked hiking route when planning, without combining the two into one route.

The Gwda River is another water feature in Piła: it flows through the city and is used by canoeists for trips. Park na Wyspie has a beach and a kayak launch. In summer, concerts, a festival and sporting events take place there. Canoe trips on the Gwda and the park’s facilities are therefore different ways to enjoy a stay by the water. The park’s programme adds seasonal options.

Cycling, art and history

Several described routes pass through Piła for cyclists. A 60-kilometre section of the international R1 cycle route runs from Stobno PKP via Piła to Osiek nad Notecią. The Transwielkopolska Cycling Route also passes through Piła, on the route from Poznań to Okonek. The educational “Smok” cycle route is just over 20 kilometres long; its stated endpoint is in Piła-Kalina. The distances make the different route lengths comparable, but do not indicate how long each ride takes. Conditions on the “Smok” route may change, so check them before setting out.

Those interested in culture will find various ways to explore art and history in Piła. Galeria MS has been part of Muzeum Stanisława Staszica since 2003. It presents photography, painting, drawing, graphic art and three-dimensional objects. Muzeum Okręgowe offers educational sessions on archaeology, ethnography, history and art history, based on its permanent and temporary exhibitions. In addition, there is a street art tour featuring colourful murals by local artists. These offerings have different emphases, from art forms on display and museum subjects to art in public spaces.

The city’s architectural history includes the former arsenal, which has been preserved at 1 Maja Street 1 and was built in 1843–1844. The historic house of Stanisław Staszic is also a sight to see in Piła. Together with Muzeum Stanisława Staszica, these provide another way to explore the city’s history, although they are not the same kind of attraction.

When to visit and finding accommodation

One difference in timing is particularly useful when planning your trip: Kuźnik is accessible year-round, while concerts, the festival and sporting events at Park na Wyspie take place in summer. If you are travelling by bike, also bear in mind that conditions on the “Smok” cycle route may change. When choosing a hotel in Schneidemühl, you can first decide whether nature trails, cycling routes, culture or a summer event will be the main focus of your stay.
