A Gothic castle, a riverfront promenade almost one kilometre long and a city park covering nearly ten hectares give Konin a remarkably varied character. If you are looking for a hotel in Konin, you can plan your stay around whether culture, the Warta riverfront or green space is your priority.

The Warta riverfront and routes through Konin

The Bulwar Nadwarciański is a riverfront promenade almost one kilometre long, along the Warta in the Old Town. It includes viewing terraces, two amphitheatres, a passenger landing, a river marina and walking paths; the Bulwar is also part of the Szlak Wielkiej Pętli Wielkopolski. A longer road route is the Szlak Bursztynowy: in Konin, it covers nine kilometres along Świętojańska, Wał Tarejwy, Kościelna, Plac Wolności, Warszawska, Dworcowa, Kolejowa, Torowa and Leśna streets. The two routes thus differ both in their connection to the river and in their length. Check the route conditions for the Szlak Bursztynowy before setting out.

The castle and permanent exhibitions

The Gothic castle stands in Gosławice, a district of Konin. Bishop Andrzej Łaskarz herbu Godziemba had it built in 1426. Today, it houses the Muzeum Okręgowe w Koninie. The permanent exhibitions cover the history of Konin, Judaica and the prehistory of the Konin region. The castle therefore brings together architectural history and three distinct exhibition themes: the city, Judaica and the region’s early history.

Historical traces in the city

Dom Zemełki is the oldest brick residential building in Konin’s Old Town. It was built around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Another link to the city’s history is the former country house of Zofia Urbanowska in the Old Town: this Neoclassical building dates from the mid-19th century. The writer lived there from 1910 until her death in 1939. Alongside the architectural history of Dom Zemełki, this offers a tangible story of a literary life.

Konin’s former synagogue dates from 1832. In its main hall, original paintings, partially reconstructed, remain on the east wall and on four columns. The building is not open to visitors. The town hall is another building whose date is known: this Neoclassical structure was built between 1796 and 1803. At noon every day, the “Hejnał Miasta Konina” is played from its tower. If this time matters for planning your day, check locally.

City park and animal collection

The “Park im. Fryderyka Chopina” lies in the western part of the Old Town, covers nearly ten hectares and was established in 1843. As a city park, it offers a different focus from the historic buildings and exhibitions in the castle. Animals kept there include alpacas, African ostriches, emus, goats, wild boar, donkeys, ponies and fallow deer. The species found in the park may change; if seeing a particular animal matters to your visit, check the current collection. Historic buildings, permanent exhibitions, the riverfront and a large urban green space are therefore all available as ways to shape your visit.
