Licheń Stary offers several distinct highlights: the Basilica of Licheń, Golgotha with its religiously designed areas, St. Dorothy's Church and the Józef Jarzębowski Museum. The selection thus ranges from sacred architecture and religious design to building history and museum collections. The beach on Lake Licheńskie also offers a seasonal bathing area. If you are planning a stay, you can first decide whether buildings, religious design, collections or a seasonal stay by the water should be your main focus.
The Major Sacred Buildings and Golgotha
The Basilica of Licheń was built between 1994 and 2004 and is the largest sacred building in Poland. Its construction period provides a point of reference for the more recent sacred architecture of Licheń Stary. The organ ensemble is named after Saint John Paul II; it is currently the largest organ ensemble in Poland and the fourth largest in Europe. It can be heard during every Holy Mass and at scheduled concerts. If you would like to attend a concert in particular, check the dates in advance, as individual concert dates may vary.
Golgotha differs from the basilica in its form and the variety of its designed elements. The 25-metre-high hill was built of stone and concrete; it features labyrinth passages, grottoes, chapels, statues and reliefs. A winding path leads to the summit and is used for quiet reflection during pilgrimages. At Golgotha, both the route and the architectural and visual elements are central. Anyone interested in the design of religious places can consider this complex a distinct highlight alongside the church building.
Local History and the Museum
St. Dorothy's Church is a Neo-Gothic parish church founded by the Kwilecki family. Its construction history begins in 1854. The presbytery was added in 1872, the sacristy and vestibule in 1903; in 1978, the church was renovated and extended. This sequence distinguishes the original church building from later additions and a subsequent renovation. Unlike the basilica, built between 1994 and 2004, the parish church therefore has several dated construction phases spanning the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Józef Jarzębowski Museum has more than ten thousand exhibits, and its collection continues to grow. Compared with the churches, the focus shifts from architectural form and chronology to a large, evolving collection. This offers a distinct cultural perspective if you would like to include museum collections in your interests alongside sacred buildings during your stay.
Visiting Information and Bathing Area
According to the sanctuary, the Papal Chambers can only be visited on a guided tour, which is free of charge. On weekdays, the sanctuary states that visits are possible by prior arrangement with the Pilgrim Services Office. Check in advance whether a tour is available for your visit and when it takes place.
There is a seasonal bathing area at the beach on Lake Licheńskie. Its operating period is listed as 1 July to 31 August, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check before your visit whether this schedule applies for the season in question.
