The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the southwestern part of the village of Blizanów, on a small rise. Its wooden architecture and the Marian devotion associated with it give a trip to Blizanów a specific cultural focus. The church can be viewed from several perspectives: as a building probably erected in the 16th century, as a structure with later additions, and as a place where a particular Marian image and votive offerings are linked.
Wooden construction with Late Gothic features
The church is a wooden building oriented east, with a log construction, exterior boarding and a single tower. Oriented east means that the building faces east. Log construction and exterior boarding describe different features of the wooden structure; its eastward orientation adds information about the building’s alignment. At the same time, despite later alterations, the church retains characteristic features of a Late Gothic construction scheme. The building has therefore been modified over time, without losing its Late Gothic features.
Church, chapel and bell tower: different building phases
The church was probably built in 1532. The Chapel of St. Tekla was added to its north side in 1610–1611. The wooden bell tower stands beside the church and dates from the second half of the 18th century. The chapel is on the north side, while the bell tower stands beside the church building: the later structures therefore differ both in date and in their spatial relationship to the church. The sequence comprises the probable construction of the church, the addition of the chapel and the later bell tower; each date refers to a different structure.
The Marian image and its religious tradition
The image of Our Lady of Blizanów is in the main altar. It is a 17th-century copy of the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa; the artist who painted the Blizanów version is unknown. Numerous votive offerings are placed on red velvet behind the image. This art-historical classification links the Częstochowa original with a local version of the image, while the votive offerings add another, religious dimension. The devotion to Our Lady of Blizanów is considered to be alive to this day. Art and devotion are two related but distinct perspectives: one concerns the image’s origins, the other its role in an enduring religious tradition.
Blizanów as part of a wooden architecture route
The Wooden Churches of the Kalisz Region Trail passes through the municipality of Blizanów and includes the church in Blizanów. The trail places this individual building within a regional theme centered on wooden churches. The church can thus be understood both through its own location and building history and through its inclusion on this named trail.
To decide whether Blizanów suits your cultural interests, two perspectives are particularly accessible: building history and sacred image tradition. The first traces the story from the probable construction of the church through the chapel and bell tower to its surviving Late Gothic features. The second links the Marian image to its Częstochowa original, the votive offerings and the devotion considered to remain alive. Both perspectives concern the same church, but emphasize different aspects.
