Uninhabited protected areas, island destinations and handcrafted Patadyong fabric showcase the different sides of Antique. When choosing your accommodation, it’s worth first considering which themes you want your trip to focus on: islands and water, highland nature, or culture and handicrafts.
Islands and protected landscapes
Nogas Island off Anini-y is uninhabited and covers 24 hectares. It is a marine and bird sanctuary, as well as a government island marine reserve. Mararison Island, also known as Malalison Island, is a small island beach destination and a barangay in Culasi. Both islands offer a focus on island and coastal landscapes, though their described characteristics differ.
The highlands offer a different connection with nature. Danao Lake in San Remigio covers 3 hectares and is a natural habitat for freshwater fish and birds. Sibalom Natural Park was designated a natural park on April 23, 2000. In Barangay General Fullon, San Remigio, the Antique Rice Terraces stretch across a contiguous area of 600 hectares and are considered a cultural treasure. These places offer different focal points for your selection, from islands and habitats to a cultural landscape.
Water experiences and activities
Malumpati Cold Spring in Pandan is the river’s main swimming area. Its natural pool is aquamarine blue and the water refreshingly cold; its appearance and water conditions can vary by season. Bungan Bungan Spring forms a flowing river that springs from a source inside Maanghit Cave. For another contrast in nature, Danao Lake lies in the highlands of San Remigio and provides a habitat for freshwater fish and birds.
In Tibiao, trekking trips to Bugtong Bato Fall and kayaking on the Tibiao River are available. Cultural immersion tours to the Antique Rice Terraces are also offered from there. For a Kawa Hot Bath, you bathe in large, repurposed iron cauldrons filled with fresh spring water from the mountains. The activities suit different interests: water and paddling, trekking, cultural insights, or a bath in a cauldron. Tour and guide arrangements may change; confirm the specific arrangements in advance.
Nature walks are offered in Valderrama Nature Park. With some luck, you may see blooming Rafflesia; flowering is seasonal. If you’re hoping to see a flower in bloom, take the timing into account when planning, but don’t count on it as a guaranteed part of a visit.
Culture and local handicrafts
The Binirayan Festival commemorates the arrival of ten Bornean datus, or chiefs, on the shores of Malandog in the mid-13th century. This historical account gives the festival a distinct cultural connection; the specific program may change. The Antique Rice Terraces in San Remigio also bring landscape and culture together: their contiguous area of 600 hectares is considered a cultural treasure.
In Bugasong, particularly in Barangay Bagtason, local weavers make Patadyong fabric by hand. This offers a glimpse of local textile crafts alongside nature and activities. If culture is your priority, you can consider the handicrafts, festival tradition and terraces as distinct cultural themes, rather than treating them as one excursion program.
Getting there and finding your way
You can reach Antique by overland transfer from Iloilo City in three hours, and from Caticlan or Kalibo in two hours. Travel times and transport availability may change. Within Antique, local buses, vans and tricycles provide short connections; check current routes and travel times for your specific destinations.
Igbaclag Cave is about three kilometers from Barangay Aningalan and can be reached by vehicle. Check in advance whether a visit is currently possible. Before traveling, ask about current access to strawberry picking at Aningalan Strawberry Garden in Barangay Aningalan, San Remigio. If you’re planning to rent a kayak at Sira-an Hot Spring and Health Resort in Anini-y, confirm in advance whether rentals are currently available.
