The Iloilo River Esplanade is a 9.1-kilometer linear park along the Iloilo River. It is suitable for jogging, cycling and leisure activities with river views. In Western Visayas, these activities sit alongside very different discoveries: church architecture, textile crafts and marine protected areas offer distinct points of interest when planning a trip.

Churches, Crafts and History

Miagao Church was built in 1786 by Spanish Augustinian missionaries. In 1993, it was recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Baroque Churches of the Philippines.” Its construction date and World Heritage status give a visit a clear historical point of reference.

In the broader destination of the Philippines, the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Baroque Churches of the Philippines” comprises four Roman Catholic churches built during the Spanish period, between the 16th and 18th centuries. Their locations include Manila, Santa Maria, Paoay and Miag-ao. The architecture of the four churches combines European church design and construction techniques with local materials and decorative motifs. This places Miagao in the context of a wider architectural heritage of the Philippines.

At Molo Church, a different detail takes center stage: it is designed in the Gothic Revival style, and its pink façade features figures of female saints only. At Piña Village, by contrast, visitors can watch handwoven piña fabric being made from the leaves of a local pineapple variety. The focus shifts here from church architecture to a craft-making process. The Iloilo Museum complements these cultural themes by preserving Ilonggo cultural heritage, art and historical artifacts, and sharing the region’s rich history.

River, Coast and Protected Areas

The natural attractions also differ considerably. Taklong Island National Marine Reserve is located in the municipality of Nueva Valencia and comprises 41 islets as well as the coastal barangays of La Paz and San Roque. It is both a marine protected area and a marine research center. These two designations show that the area is defined by more than its geographic extent alone.

The Guisi Lighthouse was also built in Nueva Valencia, in 1894. The Port of Iloilo is another named port of call for navigating by sea. As a historic seaport, it has connections to Manila, Bacolod, Guimaras and other islands.

Carles is home to Sicogon Island Wildlife Sanctuary, the first wildlife sanctuary in Western Visayas. A total of 318 plant species and 62 bird species have been recorded there. These figures give a concrete impression of the diversity documented in the sanctuary. Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary has a different focus: it is a wildlife sanctuary for large flying foxes, birds and a diverse range of flora and fauna.
