Romblon can be discovered through several striking features: the forests and peaks of Sibuyan, a sea cave on Carabao Island lit by natural light, and marble as a cultural hallmark of the province. There are also protected coastal waters in Calatrava and a waterfall considered the highest in the municipality. The landscape and its crafts offer distinct highlights.

Mount Guiting-Guiting: Elevation and Mountain Nature

Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park is a protected area in the municipalities of Cajidiocan, Magdiwang and San Fernando on Sibuyan in Romblon Province. At 2,058 meters above sea level, Mount Guiting-Guiting is the highest mountain on Sibuyan. Dense forests and numerous endemic plant and animal species characterize the mountain. The elevation puts the summit in perspective; the forests and endemic species draw attention to the natural environment.

Mount Guiting-Guiting is also one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the Philippines. This description adds another measure to its elevation: it describes the climbing challenge, not the height. For those interested in mountain landscapes, there is more here than a striking summit—the distinctive plant and animal species are also among Sibuyan’s defining features.

Sea Cave and Coastal Waters

On Carabao Island, Cathedral Cave is a natural sea cave. Striking rock formations and crystal-clear water define the site; natural light illuminates a chamber whose shape resembles a cathedral. The cave thus combines a distinctive interior space with views of the coastal landscape.

Near Cathedral Cave, a site offers cliff jumping from limestone cliffs overlooking the island’s turquoise waters. The cave and cliffs offer different perspectives on the coast: inside the cave, attention turns to the rock formations and light-filled chamber; cliff jumping focuses on the cliffs and the water below.

In Calatrava, marine protected areas offer snorkeling and diving in protected coastal waters. These activities are associated with dive groups approved by the municipal government. This focus differs from the caves and cliffs of Carabao: here, protected waters and approved groups shape the coastal experience.

Marble and Handcrafted Works

Romblon is known as the “Marble Capital of the Philippines.” The 2023 Marble Festival in the municipality of Romblon showed how marble is used in crafts: it featured handcrafted marble works, including miniature animals and people, tables and jewelry. The festival served as a platform to promote local artists and marble carvers from Romblon.

The works on display ranged from small miniatures to tables and jewelry. This difference in scale reveals the material in different ways—as a medium for delicate figurines and for larger objects. The festival connected Romblon’s well-known association with marble to specific works and to the artists and carvers who created them.

More Nature Highlights in Calatrava

Tago Falls is in Barangay Pagsangahan in Calatrava and is the highest waterfall in the municipality. Together with Calatrava’s marine protected areas, it presents a clear contrast: a waterfall on one hand, and protected coastal waters associated with snorkeling and diving on the other. This offers different ways to take in Romblon’s nature—from Sibuyan’s mountain forests and summit to Carabao’s sea cave and Calatrava’s waterfall and coast.
