Occidental Mindoro brings together natural landscapes, cultural sites and activities that appeal to a wide range of interests. In Sablayan, discoveries range from Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park and the Mindoro Pines to islands, lakes and a museum. Elsewhere in the province, you’ll find waterfalls, beaches and trekking trails. You can organize your choices based on whether you want to explore landscapes, spend time by the water, or learn more about the area’s history and culture.
Nature conservation and landscapes
Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park is designated an ASEAN Heritage Park and is considered an important biodiversity area. Two-thirds of the park lies within Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro. The Mindoro Pines also offer a glimpse of the area’s natural environment: natural stands of the Mindoro pine species Pinus mercussi are preserved there, and the species is classified as a priority for protection. Both places draw attention to the protection of habitats and species.
The landscape takes different forms along the coast and inland. The 30-hectare Pandan Grande Island is popular with snorkelers and divers. Nearby is an underwater drop-off inhabited by pawikans, dugongs, young sharks and other reef fish. In San Jose, Inasakan Beach on Ilin Island has white sand and crystal-clear water, while Ambulong Island has white beaches, sandbars and snorkeling opportunities. Garza Island in Barangay Alibog, Magsaysay, is a three-hectare island with a white sand beach. Inland, the forest-surrounded Agbalala Falls lies in Abra de Ilog, and the tranquil freshwater Carindan Lake in Santa Cruz is well suited to sightseeing and nature photography.
Experiences on the water and on the trails
At Panikian Lake, you can canoe, fish, and observe birds and bats. If you’d rather explore on foot, Mount Calavite in Paluan has a network of trekking trails with varying levels of difficulty. Check local trail and access conditions before visiting. In Sablayan, the Sablayan 3 in 1 Adventure combines rappelling, climbing a climbing wall and ziplining. The total cable length is 1.7 kilometers; check in advance whether the activity will be available during your visit.
These activities are quite different: the lake focuses on wildlife observation and peaceful pursuits on the water, while the activity in Sablayan combines several adventure experiences. Pandan Grande, in turn, offers a different kind of water experience, appealing to snorkelers and divers. You can choose which places to include in your plans based on your personal interests, without treating the different activities as interchangeable.
History, culture and the Arawatan Festival
The Sablayan Museum showcases the town’s historical, cultural and biological richness. The Mangyan Monument honors the Tao Buhid and the Alangan, who are described as Sablayan’s first inhabitants. Both places offer a way to explore Sablayan’s history and cultural heritage, but in different ways: the museum covers several subject areas, while the monument commemorates specific communities. Check the museum’s current opening hours before visiting.
The Arawatan Festival is also part of Occidental Mindoro’s cultural life. Held annually in the provincial capital, Mamburao, the week-long celebration commemorates the anniversary of the province’s founding. The festival includes cultural performances, agrotourism exhibits, trade fairs and community activities. Dates and programs vary; check the details for your travel year if you want to plan around the festival.
