Lush vegetation, impressive mountains and diving spots define Negros Oriental. Dumaguete City serves as a starting point for various popular destinations in the province. Nature lovers can discover a wide range of landscapes, from biodiverse marine environments off the coast to crater lakes and mossy mountain forests.

Coral Reefs and Marine Conservation

Apo Island is a marine ecotourism destination off the coast of Dauin. The island is recognized for its coral reefs, diverse marine life and community-based marine conservation. While snorkeling and diving, visitors encounter an underwater world with more than 400 coral species, sea turtles, colorful reef fish and large schools of jacks. Dauin is also known for exceptional muck diving and abundant marine life. The Bio-os Takot Diot Marine Sanctuary in Amlan is another diving spot in Negros Oriental.

Crater Lakes, Mountain Forest and Waterfalls

The Twin Lakes Balinsasayao and Danao Natural Park in Sibulan is home to two crater lakes, surrounded by lush rainforest and abundant wildlife. The park is the 59th ASEAN Heritage Park. Mt. Talinis, also called Cuernos de Negros, offers a different perspective on the mountain landscape: it is the setting for a popular two-day trek with an overnight stay through lush jungle and mossy forests. A scenic camping experience at Lake Nailig is part of the Mt. Talinis trail.

Casaroro Falls reveals another side of Negros Oriental’s natural beauty. The waterfall plunges about 100 feet into a natural pool surrounded by tropical forests and towering rock cliffs. Access involves a scenic hike and a descent via stairs; conditions can vary seasonally. The natural experiences therefore differ not only in their scenery but also in the type of route described, from a multi-day trek to a hike with a stairway descent.

Dolphin Watching and Coastal Landscapes

The Bais Dolphin Watching and Manjuyod White Sandbar Experience Package combines wildlife watching with coastal landscapes in Negros Oriental. The Bais dolphin-watching experience begins with a boat trip in the Tañon Strait, where dolphins can be observed in their natural habitat. Those interested in marine life can enjoy this experience focused on wildlife watching in addition to the diving spots.

Festival, Market and Local Life

The Buglasan Festival is a week-long celebration of the culture, heritage and community spirit of Negros Oriental. Dates and program vary from year to year, so check the specific festival dates if you are planning your visit around it. The Malatapay Market in Maluay, Zamboanguita, offers a different glimpse into everyday life. The market is usually held on Wednesdays and offers fresh produce, essential goods, snacks and local finds. Since the schedule is described as usual, it is advisable to confirm the market day locally.

History and conservation also shape certain places. During the term of Governor Hon. Emilio Macias II, the provincial government pursued a conservation and development project at Balanan Lake. The lake was to be promoted as an ecotourism destination while also being protected from harmful activities by locals and tourists. Mabinay’s 2024 Citizen’s Charter lists requests for guided tours of historical sites, as well as the planning and support of such tours.

Another Look at Central Visayas

The wider destination of Central Visayas offers further cultural and scenic highlights in Cebu and Bohol. In Cebu, Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño are considered important symbols of faith and history. In Loboc on Bohol, a cruise on the Loboc River offers views of lush vegetation and waterfalls; floating restaurants and performances by local artists are also part of the experience. Loboc Church is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and is known for its frescoes and carvings. Visitors can discover its history and architecture.
