The 179 distinct figures make the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs a special glimpse into Rizal’s cultural heritage. Zoomorphic and geometric forms are engraved into a rock shelter on the boundary between the municipalities of Angono and Binangonan. In 1973, the petroglyphs were declared a National Cultural Treasure. The figures themselves and their recognized significance are therefore the focus of a visit.

Rock Art and History

Caves also connect places in Rizal with the history of the Philippines. Calinawan Cave in Tanay was the setting for an event in which Filipino Katipuneros decided to rebel against Spanish rule. Pamitinan Cave in Rodriguez is associated with a different event: during Holy Week in 1895, Andres Bonifacio and seven Katipuneros made a pilgrimage there and formed a pact for freedom.

These two historical accounts relate to different caves and places. They offer concrete points of interest for history enthusiasts, while the petroglyphs represent a different kind of evidence: engraved figures rather than a recorded event.

Islands, Gorges and Waterfalls

Talim Island lies within the province of Rizal. Its western part belongs to Binangonan, and its eastern part to Cardona. In Rodriguez, Montalban Gorge, also called Wawa Gorge, forms a 1,180-foot-high water gorge between Mount Pamitinan and Mount Binicayan. These two landscapes—an island shared by two municipalities and a gorge between mountains—show how varied the province’s geographic features are.

Tanay also offers a striking natural setting: Daranak Falls lies at the foot of the Tanay mountain range. In Baras, Masungi Georeserve is located in an upland area; as a protected area, it is characterized by karst limestone formations and forested mountains. If you want to prioritize nature experiences when planning your trip, you’ll find a range of landscape types here without needing to combine them into a single route.

In Sitio Payaran, Barangay Mascap, Rodriguez, a natural attraction consists of seven cascading waterfalls. Various activities are also available in the mountains: Mt. Irid Satellite City (MISTY) is suitable for hiking, camping and trekking. The developed hiking trail on Mt. Pamitinan takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours to climb. This approximate time may help with planning; check current access conditions before visiting.

Wind Turbines, Views and Getting Around

The Pililla Wind Farms consist of 27 wind turbines and supply electricity to more than 60,000 households in the capital. Visitors are drawn there to see the wind turbines up close or enjoy a better view of the landscape from the mountains. If you plan to visit the wind farms, check current access conditions before your visit.

Manila East Road is also a point of reference on the way to Pililla. From eastern Metro Manila, it passes through Cainta, Antipolo City, Teresa, Morong, Baras and Tanay before reaching Rizal’s lakeside towns. Road conditions and traffic can change, so check the current route when planning your drive.

A Local Taste of Food and Tradition

In San Mateo, the Kakanin Festival is a parade of rice delicacies accompanied by traditional dances. It adds a culinary tradition to the archaeological and landscape discoveries. Festival details may change, so if you’re interested, it’s worth checking for current dates in advance.
