Discover the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao through its archaeological finds, structures, and landscapes. On Tawi-Tawi, the history of Balobok Rockshelter dates back to prehistoric times; mosques and torogans with official cultural heritage designations also stand here. Lake Lanao, the waters around Simunul, and the climb up Bud Bongao offer different perspectives on nature and landscape.

Traces of History and Culture

Balobok Rockshelter was a prehistoric settlement dating from 6810 to 3190 BCE. The National Museum of the Philippines declared it an Important Cultural Property in 2016. Here, a settlement history stretching far back in time meets the site's later official recognition. For those interested in cultural history, the site brings together a specific time span and a recognized cultural heritage site.

The Sheik Karim-ul Makhdum Mosque in Simunul was built in 1380 CE and is designated a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). Named structures are also a focus in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur Province: Torogan House is both a National Cultural Treasure and a National Historical Landmark. The Dayawan Torogan in Marawi is recognized as cultural heritage by the NHCP.

Weaving and dance are also part of the region's cultural identity. Pis Syabit, a Tausug weaving art, is listed in the Philippine Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory for Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. The Maranao Singkil Dance is listed in the inventory for Lanao del Sur. The entries represent different forms of intangible culture: weaving on the one hand, and dance on the other. The Sulu Museum and Library was established in 1981 by resolution of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to house ethnographic materials on Sulu culture and a library. Its founding purpose brings together cultural materials and a library, complementing the perspectives on structures and traditions.

Lakes, Marine Ecosystems, and Views

Lake Lanao is the largest lake on Mindanao. It is home to endemic freshwater species found nowhere else in the world. Alongside its size, this distinctive distribution of species makes the lake a nature attraction in its own right in the region. The waters around Simunul offer a different focus: they are rich in biodiversity and support a diverse marine ecosystem. The Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

At Bud Bongao Forest Park, visitors can hike up 3,608 steps to an elevation of 1,122 feet and take in views of Tawi-Tawi's landscape from above. The number of steps gives the climb a concrete measure; its destination is a view across the landscape. If you enjoy combining nature with a hike, this place offers a different focus from the lake or the marine waters around Simunul.

Planning a Trip with Simunul in Mind

Travelers typically reach Simunul by motorboat or pump boat from Bongao. The sea journey takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on weather and sea conditions. Check the connection before setting off, and bear in mind when planning that the stated duration depends on conditions at sea.

When choosing your destinations, you can weigh different interests against one another: early settlement history at Balobok Rockshelter, historic structures in Simunul and Marawi, entries on weaving and dance, or nature attractions ranging from Lake Lanao to the waters around Simunul.
