The Reserva Nacional Tambopata, the clay licks in the Alto Tambopata sector, and a nearby viewpoint offer different starting points for planning: biodiversity, macaw watching, a distinctive clay cliff, and a long boat journey each represent a different focus.
Tambopata as a natural area
The Reserva Nacional Tambopata was established in September 2000 by Supreme Decree No. 048-2000-AG. The inventory lists an area of 274,690 hectares. A survey referring to SERNANP 2011 records 1,260 species, including 93 amphibian, 648 bird, 108 mammal, and 323 fish species. These figures offer an overview of the diversity in the protected area; they do not guarantee that you will see any particular species during a visit.
Animals found in the Reserva include giant otters, white-lipped peccaries, monkeys, macaws, parrots, whistling ducks, taricayas, and motelos. Large trees such as lupuna and shihuahuaco, as well as aguajales, are also part of the natural area described here. Guided excursions focus on flora, fauna, and the landscape. Nature enthusiasts will find several distinct themes here: wildlife watching, plant life, and the landscape of the protected area.
Macaws or a clay cliff?
Collpa Chuncho is in the Alto Tambopata sector, in the district and province of Tambopata, and is known for macaw watching. This makes it a good choice for travelers interested in these birds. The name describes the character of the destination, not a guarantee of sightings.
A different type of landscape takes center stage at Collpa Colorado. It is also in the Alto Tambopata sector, on the left bank of the RĂo Tambopata, in the district and province of Tambopata, and within the Reserva Nacional Tambopata. Its clay cliff is 50 meters high and 500 meters long. This makes it possible to distinguish between a well-known destination for macaw watching and a clearly measured, expansive cliff and riverside landscape.
The listed route to Collpa Colorado starts at the landing stage of the Comunidad Nativa de Infierno, covers 113 kilometers by boat, and takes eight hours. This route and duration apply to this starting point. Travel conditions may vary, so do not treat the stated time as fixed. Tourist boat and catamaran trips are also offered in the Reserva Nacional Tambopata.
Seasons and accommodation choices
The Reserva is listed as a year-round destination; the dry season from May to November is considered the ideal time to visit. As weather conditions vary from year to year, this period is a seasonal guideline for planning. The Alto Tambopata sector also has a raised viewpoint with restroom facilities and an associated raised walkway almost 500 meters long. This adds a specific on-site orientation option to the region’s nature experiences.
If you are looking for vacation rentals in Inca, it helps to decide on your preferred focus first: are you most interested in the biodiversity of the Reserva, macaw watching at Collpa Chuncho, or the landscape and listed boat journey to Collpa Colorado? For Colorado, planning should include the departure from the landing stage at the Comunidad Nativa de Infierno and the stated travel time. This lets you approach choosing accommodation and organizing a possible nature excursion as two related but distinct decisions.
