Iberia brings together urban landmarks and a surrounding waterscape. At its center is the Plaza de Armas; the Tahuamanu River and Lago Iberia provide additional points of reference for getting oriented. Parque Shiringuero (El Shiringuero) is also in the city. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish places within the city from landscape and port locations in the surrounding area.
Shiringa Motifs in the Plaza de Armas
The Plaza de Armas de Iberia is in the city center and is shaped like a Shiringa seed. It features a statue of a rubber tapper extracting latex from a Shiringa tree (Hevea brasiliensis). The shape and figure bring together two motifs from the same plant: the seed and latex extraction. If you are interested in the connection between design and the work depicted, you can consider both details together. If you plan to visit the plaza, check visiting conditions in advance.
A City on the Tahuamanu, a Lake Nearby
The city of Iberia lies on the left bank of the Tahuamanu. Lago Iberia is nearby, between the river and the settlement center; it covers approximately 6.20 hectares. It is a clear-water oxbow lake on a floodable terrace on the left riverbank and the largest of three oxbow lakes in an area protected for nature tourism. These locations can be considered together: Iberia lies on the left bank, while Lago Iberia is additionally located between the Tahuamanu and the settlement center. If the protection context is important for your visit, confirm the current management status locally.
River Ports and Seasonal Navigation
Two river ports are located nearby. Puerto Portillo is the most frequently used river port, lies in the direction of Lago Iberia, and faces the city of Iberia. Puerto Saboya lies on the left bank of the Tahuamanu and also faces the city. For Portillo, the focus is on how often it is used and its direction toward the lake; for Saboya, it is on its location on the left bank. If you plan to include a specific port in your itinerary, confirm its current operating status locally.
During the rainy season, the river allows navigation by boats with a shallow draft as well as boats with a capacity of 15 tonnes. Season, draft, and capacity are therefore relevant planning considerations if river navigation is important to you. Check local water levels and available services in advance.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Priorities
When looking for a vacation rental in Iberia, you can use the focus of your trip as a point of comparison: the plaza and park are in the city, while the lake and ports are nearby. So check the specific accommodation’s location in relation to the places you plan to visit. This keeps your accommodation choice aligned with your own travel plans.
