Explore Satipo from different perspectives: from Mirador Cerro Satélite, you can look out over the city, while Museo Callegari showcases collections on the region’s nature and history. A plaza, a church and weekend offerings in the Comunidad Nativa Atahualpa add to the cityscape. The wider Satipo destination also offers archaeological and scenic excursions. You can plan city visits and trips to more distant destinations as different parts of your journey.

City Views and History in Satipo

Mirador Cerro Satélite offers a panoramic view of the city of Satipo. At the summit stand a chapel dedicated to Señor de Cachuy and a four-meter-high reinforced-concrete cross. The viewpoint thus combines clear city views with two distinctive structures at the summit.

On the Plaza Principal de Satipo stands a gazebo with a bust of R. P. Rafael Gastelua. The Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís in Satipo was built at its current location after the 1947 earthquake. These places offer different points of interest: the plaza is associated with the bust, while the church’s history also encompasses the period after the earthquake.

Collections at Museo Callegari

Museo Callegari is located in the seventh block of Avenida Francisco Irazola, at No. 791, south of the Plaza de Armas. Its ornithological collection on the central Selva includes, among other birds, Andean cocks-of-the-rock, eagles, falcons and toucans. It also features striking insects collected by the Callegari family over many years, as well as stone utilitarian and war artifacts. The museum also has a botanical garden.

The different collection areas give the visit a distinct focus, ranging from birds and insects to artifacts and plants. If you are planning a visit, it is best to confirm the address before setting out and check current visiting options.

Weekend Offerings and Regional Cuisine

On the outskirts of Satipo, the Comunidad Nativa Atahualpa offers handicrafts, dances and typical dishes on weekends. The focus is thus on different themes: craftwork, cultural performances and food. The weekend schedule is important for planning; check the current options before making a specific visit.

Satipo is known for producing coffee and cacao. Together with the typical dishes in Atahualpa, these products shape the destination’s culinary scene. The emphasis differs: here, it is on coffee and cacao production; there, on dishes offered on weekends.

Petroglyphs in the Wider Satipo Destination

The Petroglifos de Huanacaure are located on the left bank of the RĂo Satipo, near Puente Blanco in the Satipo District. The site comprises 42 bas-relief carvings on a dark brown rock, possibly granite. They are estimated to be approximately 3,500 years old; finds at Centro Poblado Paratushiali serve as a comparison.

The drive from Plaza Mayor de Satipo consists of two sections. The first is 10.5 kilometers and takes about 20 minutes, ending at the turnoff to Centro Poblado Pampa Mandarina. From there, it is another 6 kilometers and about 8 minutes to the ticket booth at Puente Blanco. The total distance is 16.5 kilometers. Both sections follow unpaved roads and are listed as suitable for private cars. Travel times are approximate, and road conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Other Scenic Destinations

The Cataratas de la Resistencia offer a different perspective on the wider Satipo destination. They comprise seven waterfalls, ranging from 8 to 22 meters in height. For your travel planning, this means there is a distinction between the Petroglifos de Huanacaure, an archaeological highlight in the wider Satipo destination, and the scenic experience at the Cataratas de la Resistencia, which are also in the wider Satipo destination. If you include both, you can consider these different interests separately when choosing destinations and accommodation.

First decide whether your trip will focus mainly on places and collections in the city of Satipo, or whether you will also plan excursions to destinations in the wider Satipo destination.
