San Ramón combines city history with natural attractions nearby. At Plaza Mayor, planted flower beds and a water pool shape the scene; the Catedral de San Ramón adds a cultural focus. Catarata El Tirol and Mirador Montañas De Bosques Encantados offer two distinct landscape experiences: tiers and pools on one hand, and views across the valley and mountain range on the other. This distinction can help with planning if you are deciding whether to focus your trip more on nature or the city center.

Waterfall and landscape

Catarata El Tirol has three tiers with a total height of 35 meters. At the base, a shallow pool forms, about one meter deep. The path to the waterfall passes through vegetation that includes palms, orchids, bromeliads, and ferns. The waterfall’s shape and the vegetation along the footpath are both distinctive natural features in the area around San Ramón.

For route guidance: From Plaza Mayor de San Ramón, the described route follows a paved road for five kilometers to the Playa Hermosa sector. Then, two kilometers on an unpaved road lead to the waterfall. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Mirador Montañas De Bosques Encantados offers a different perspective. From the hamlet of Chunchuyacu, the view extends across the San Ramón valley and the mountain range of the Chanchamayo Selva Alta. The viewpoint draws attention to the broader landscape, while the focus at Catarata El Tirol is on the tiered waterfalls and pool. The two attractions offer different highlights, but do not form a single route.

Plaza Mayor and the cityscape

Plaza Mayor de San Ramón is in the city center; its construction dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Its design includes nine planted beds with ornamental plants. In the center is a water pool covering about 50 square meters and one meter deep. Aquatic plants grow in it, and fish and turtles live there. The pool also features a monumental fish sculpture. The plaza thus connects an early chapter in the city’s history with visible details of its present-day design.

Cathedral and cultural heritage

Catedral de San Ramón is built mainly of adobe and wood. It has a gabled roof, a white-painted facade with earth-toned details, and a bell tower visible from the main square. As the city’s principal Catholic church, it is also the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of San Ramón. Religious activities held there include Masses, patron saint festivals, and other celebrations attended by local residents and visitors. If you plan to attend a particular service or celebration, check the date in advance.

There is also a pagoda-style pavilion in Plaza Mayor that honors San Ramón’s Chinese community. Since 1884, the community has been represented there by the “Wha Yen Con Zie” society. The pavilion adds another cultural dimension to the cityscape and contrasts with the cathedral’s architecture.

The area’s history also extends beyond the city center: the former Casa Hacienda El Naranjal is in Centro Poblado Naranjal, within the district of San Ramón. During the price boom of the 1940s, it produced up to 10,000 quintales of coffee per year. This historical episode complements the architectural and urban impressions with a glimpse of the area’s former coffee production.
