Namora combines a historic cityscape, a guitar-making tradition passed down in the district, and scenic destinations in the surrounding area. This gives you several themes to choose from as you plan your trip: local history, cultural craftsmanship, and nature.

Plaza and Historic Cityscape

The Plaza de Armas de Namora is the city’s civic, political, and tourist center. It forms part of an area designated as a Monumental Cityscape within Peru’s national cultural heritage. Historic buildings surround the plaza, including the Church of Santa Rosa de Namora and houses with preserved balcony balustrades and decorative moldings around door and window openings.

The plaza serves as a ceremonial venue for official celebrations. These include the district anniversary, national holidays, the patron saint festival of Santa Rosa de Namora, and carnival celebrations. Bicycle rides around the plaza are also associated with the Plaza de Armas.

Guitar Making as a District Tradition

In 2022, the tradition of making stringed musical instruments, particularly guitars, in the Namora district was declared part of Peru’s national cultural heritage. The related knowledge, skills, and practices are passed down from generation to generation. This distinguishes two cultural themes: the plaza represents the designated cityscape, while guitar making represents inherited craft knowledge in the district.

Scenery Nearby: Waterfall, Lagoon, and Rock Formation

Catarata El Cumbe is in the hamlet of Cau Cau, about 8 km east of Namora at an elevation of 2,826 m. The waterfall is around 23 m high; its water comes from the RĂo La Quinua and plunges through an opening between rock walls. Lush vegetation surrounds it. January to April is considered the best time to visit, when water levels are higher during the rainy season. Conditions can vary from year to year.

Laguna de Quelluacocha is in the hamlet of the same name, northeast of Namora district and about 8 km away. The lagoon is home to wild Quelluas, considered endangered wild ducks; Totora grows in the central area of the lake. Unlike at the waterfall, the natural features here are the lake, ducks, and Totora. Excursions around the lake are associated with the lagoon. Activities also include walks and trekking around the lake. Check current offerings and trail conditions before planning a specific trip.

El Piticunga is an anthropomorphic karst rock formation between Quelluacocha and La Masma, west of Namora district. Local residents see a human-like figure in it. This distinguishes the rock formation from the water-related features of the waterfall and lagoon.
