450 meters long and 80 meters wide: Playa Tacuru Pucu gives Hernandarias direct access to the shore of Lago ITAIPU. The renewed, publicly accessible area is part of Parque Tacuru Pucu and is located in the city’s Costanera area. These dimensions give a clear idea of the beach’s extent; at the same time, the shore is part of a larger area for excursions and recreation. Check the current operating conditions before your visit.

Explore the Costanera on foot or by bike

The Costanera de Hernandarias also invites you to get outdoors: its bike path is 2,100 meters long. Walking paths are intended for walking, jogging or strolling. This gives you two different ways to get moving—a measured route for cycling and paths for a stroll or a run. When planning your time there, you can consider which option best suits your outing. Current path conditions may vary.

Parque Tacuru Pucu also has sports courts for soccer, volleyball and beach tennis, playgrounds, walking paths and outdoor fitness equipment. Together with the bike path, these facilities offer a variety of ways to enjoy the park: sports areas, outdoor exercise and places to play. Playa Tacuru Pucu is also part of this park, but lies directly on the lakeshore. Those interested in Hernandarias can therefore enjoy views of Lago ITAIPU as well as a range of ways to include outdoor activities and relaxation in their plans.

Regional history at the Museo ITAIPU – Tierra Guaraní

The Museo ITAIPU – Tierra Guaraní in Hernandarias offers a different perspective. Its educational exhibitions and interpretive offerings present history, biodiversity and regional identity in connection with the Río Paraná. Water and nature are therefore not only landscape themes: the museum also places them in a historical and cultural context. If you would like to add a cultural focus to your stay, this perspective on the region offers a distinct contrast to the city’s waterfront and recreational areas.

Alto Paraná: Nature and culture in a broader setting

The broader destination of Alto Paraná also offers a range of natural attractions. Salto Ñacunday is located in Parque Nacional Ñacunday and is 43 meters high and 70 meters wide. The Saltos del río Monday are in the district of Presidente Franco, near the río Monday’s confluence with the río Paraná. The waterfall is more than 40 meters high and comprises three main falls as well as several smaller ones. At the Saltos del Monday, trails wind through native forests and offer opportunities to observe local flora and fauna. Arborismo and ziplining are also offered there; check their current availability in advance.

In Alto Paraná, the Monumento Científico Moisés Bertoni is dedicated to nature, science and history. The site’s history dates back to 1895, when Moisés Bertoni discovered the place where the colony of Guillermo Tell would later be established. It was later called Puerto Bertoni; today, the Monumento Científico Moisés Bertoni is located there. Bertoni developed a life’s work there connected with nature, science and agriculture.

The museum at the Monumento has ten rooms. Exhibits include personal belongings, handwritten book manuscripts and letters, part of Bertoni’s library of 7,000 volumes, and a reconstruction of his laboratory and graphic work. Guided interpretive walks are also offered at the Monumento, where visitors can explore the local flora and fauna; camping is also possible. Access is partially authorized. Check in advance which visits are possible.

Another natural area in Alto Paraná is the Refugio Biológico Tati Yupi. Access requires advance reservation. Authorization must be collected on the day of the visit at the Centro de Recepción de Visitas de ITAIPU – Paraguay; identification must be presented. Groups must also provide a participant list. Confirm the current entry requirements before your trip.

Festivals and community traditions

Festivals in Alto Paraná also offer insight into regional communities. In Los Cedrales, the annual Fiesta de la Cosecha is celebrated with a communal lunch featuring Asado a la estaca, where residents give thanks to the Virgen Aparecida. In Naranjal, the traditional Fiesta de la Costilla takes place in July. It brings together Paraguayans, Brazilians and their descendants who live and work in the town. If you would like to include one of the festivals in your travel plans, check current dates and access arrangements in advance; whether public visits are possible has not been confirmed in every case.
