Salto Ñacunday in Parque Nacional Ñacunday is 43 metres high and 70 metres wide. The park is located in the Ñacunday district of Alto Paraná. The Saltos del río Monday have a different appearance: they are located in the Presidente Franco district, near the mouth of the río Monday where it flows into the río Paraná. The waterfall is more than 40 metres high and comprises three main falls as well as several smaller ones. At Ñacunday, height and width take centre stage; at Monday, the division into main and smaller falls stands out.

Waterfalls, Forest and Trails

In the Saltos del Monday area, hiking trails wind through native forests, offering the chance to observe the local flora and fauna. Arborismo and zip-lining are also available at the waterfall, with views over the river and the waterfall. Check whether these activities are currently available before your trip.

Another natural and cultural site in the region is Monumento Científico Moisés Bertoni in Presidente Franco. In 1895, Moisés Bertoni discovered the site of what later became the Guillermo Tell colony. It was later named Puerto Bertoni; today's Monumento Científico Moisés Bertoni is located there. Bertoni developed a life project at this site connected with nature, science and agriculture. His scientific contributions include the discovery of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, known as stevia or Ka’a he’e.

Moisés Bertoni: Collection and Visiting Information

The museum at the Monumento displays personal belongings, manuscript books, letters and part of Bertoni's library, which contains 7,000 volumes, in ten rooms. It also features a reconstruction of his laboratory and examples of his graphic work. The collection brings together personal records and insights into his scientific and agricultural work.

The Monumento offers guided interpretive walks to explore the local flora and fauna; camping is also possible. Public access is partially authorised. Find out in advance which visits and activities are accessible.

ITAIPU and Tati Yupi

ITAIPU's regional visitor attractions in Alto Paraná include the hydroelectric power plant, Museo de ITAIPU Tierra Guaraní and Refugio Biológico Tati Yupi. At the museum, educational exhibitions and interpretive materials explain the connections between the Paraná, Indigenous peoples and human development. The area's natural and cultural richness is also highlighted.

Advance booking is required to access Refugio Biológico Tati Yupi. The authorisation must be collected on the day of your visit at Centro de Recepción de Visitas de ITAIPU – Paraguay. Present an identity document; groups must also submit a list of participants. Check the current access requirements before travelling.

Hernandarias Waterfront and Recreation

Playa Tacuru Pucu is located in the Hernandarias waterfront area, is open to the public and forms part of Parque Tacuru Pucu. Check the current operating conditions before visiting. The park has sports courts for football, volleyball and beach tennis, playgrounds, a 2,100-metre cycling path, walkways and outdoor fitness equipment. There are various ways to get active and enjoy leisure time here, from ball games and cycling to walking or exercising outdoors.

Festival Traditions in Los Cedrales and Naranjal

Los Cedrales celebrates the Fiesta de la Cosecha every year: a communal lunch featuring asado a la estaca, where residents give thanks to Virgen Aparecida. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates and confirm whether visitors can attend. In Naranjal, the traditional Fiesta de la Costilla is celebrated in July. It brings together Paraguayans, Brazilians and their descendants who live and work in the city. Check the current dates and public access arrangements for this festival too.
