Nevlunghamn presents itself as a fishing village on the Skagerrak: small white houses, fishing and sailing boats in the harbor, and views of the sea define the place. The harbor is small and easy to navigate; you can take a walk there or sit on a bench. Nevlunghamn also has a harbor with a fish landing site.

Coastal path and surrounding landscape

The 35-kilometer-long Kyststien passes through Nevlunghamn and can be reached from here in just a few minutes. How long it takes to reach the path depends on your starting point; local trail conditions can also change. In the broader regional context, Kyststien is considered Norway’s oldest coastal hiking trail; it was completed in 1991. You can reach Mølen on foot from Nevlunghamn via Kyststien.

Nearby, Mølen is an archaeological and geological highlight: it has 230 burial mounds dating from the Early Iron Age to the Bronze Age. In addition, 316 bird species have been recorded at Mølen, and more than 100 different types of rock can be found there. The area is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark and is protected.

Saltstein is also nearby, and Kyststien passes through this distinctive landscape. Rugged cliffs, numerous volcanic headlands and deep ravines define the scenery. During the last Ice Age, the glacier ground and polished the rocks. The waters off Saltstein are considered one of Norway’s best surfing areas, although conditions depend on the weather.

Oddane Sand, a bathing beach, lies southwest of Nevlunghamn. A different visitor rule applies at nearby Oddane Fort: access is closed to visitors, but guided tours are available by prior arrangement. Confirm any requested tour before your trip.

Coastal culture and maritime history

Nevlunghamn is a designated cultural landscape with regional and national conservation value. The settlement comprises around 70 buildings that together evoke the coastal culture of Vestfold. The entire Loshuset, including its interior, has remained unchanged since around 1905.

The place also has a maritime past as a pilot and customs station. Nevlunghamn has had an organized fish landing site since the late 19th century; fishermen also sold some of their catch directly from their boats to customers. The connection between the harbor, fishing and coastal culture gives the townscape a historical context that extends beyond the individual buildings.

Further traces of history can be found at Rekefabrikken in Vadboholmen: from 1983 to 1993, it operated under the name “Rekefabrikken Galleri og Industrimuseum.” Tvisten fyr, visible from Nevlunghamn, was built in 1908.

Sauna and highlights for your stay

Kur Sauna is located at Omrestranda. It offers year-round sauna sessions with cold bathing, as well as aufguss rituals. While the sauna is described as a year-round offering, surfing conditions off Saltstein depend on the weather. Check the sauna’s booking and operating conditions before your trip.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a trip to Nevlunghamn, you can first choose what to focus on based on your interests: harbor and local history, Kyststien, or the nearby landscape. The coastal path passes through the village and Saltstein; Mølen offers a different focus, with its burial mounds, bird species and rocks.
