Skien offers cultural history, waterways and outdoor activities as different highlights for a stay. At Brekkeparken, Telemark’s building and living traditions sit alongside a manor house and museum; locks and boat trips shape the scene along the Telemark Canal. If you’re looking for a hotel in Skien, first decide which of these aspects interests you most. This will help you plan around specific experiences.

Cultural history at Brekkeparken

Brekkeparken comprises an open-air museum, a manor house and a modern museum with changing exhibitions. The farmhouses showcase Telemark’s cultural history, former living conditions and building traditions. Guided tours take you through the main manor house, the farmhouses in the park and the new museum building. The Søndre Brekke estate offers views of central Skien, the Skienselva River and the Telemark Canal. The manor house was home to Niels Aall, who was a minister in 1814. The park also has a playground.

Church ruin and geological history at Kapitelberget

Kapitelberget is a popular recreation and walking area. It is home to the ruins of a crypt church dating from the 12th century, as well as a protected fossil coral reef that is 430 million years old. Two different periods of history meet here: a medieval church ruin and a coral reef from much earlier in Earth’s history.

The Telemark Canal and fish ladder

The M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen sail along the Telemark Canal between Skien and Dalen. Eight lock complexes with a total of 18 lock chambers raise boats and passengers 72 metres on the route from Skien to Dalen. Day trips and boat tours with overnight stays are available from Skien. This lets you choose between a day trip and a tour with an overnight stay. Check the timetable and booking conditions when planning your trip.

A modern, universally designed fish ladder stands in central Skien. It allows endangered and other important aquatic species to bypass the power stations in the town centre and travel upstream to their natural spawning and nursery grounds. It makes a suitable destination for schools and families, as well as anyone interested in freshwater biology and river ecosystems. It is a highlight along the popular “Bryggevannet rundt” walking trail.

Cultural trails in Skien

The cultural trail starts at Bakkestranda in central Skien. The Skotfoss Trail is a 3.7-kilometre cultural walking route. It starts at the Løveid locks and features 15 illustrated information boards.

Walks and activities at Skien Fritidspark

In winter, the activity park at Skien Fritidspark becomes a 12,000-square-metre ice-skating rink. The climbing park has seven courses of varying difficulty and a 220-metre dual zipline. The longest zipline is accessible to people with disabilities.

Skien Fritidspark offers trails for short walks as well as longer training hikes. There are also illuminated, wheelchair-accessible trails measuring 1 kilometre, 2.5 kilometres and 5 kilometres. The park has four adapted rest areas along the illuminated cross-country ski trail.

You can also book a nature trail or quiz at Skien Fritidspark, or an outing to a shelter with lunch outdoors. As availability may change, check the offer in advance.
